Serriglasse

(A settlement card for the benefit of my ttrpg group - to whom this is a Pathfinder 2e setting.)

The city of Serriglasse, sometimes referred to as ‘Academy City’, is a sprawling maze of six-to-seven storey towers that taper towards the sky. Billowing banners of all colours and sizes criss-cross between roofs and balconies, throwing the streets below deep into shadow. At the street level you can see that maybe these were once humble adobe houses, but through magic, time and a booming population have evolved into something seen nowhere else in the desert.

The city of Serriglasse is built on the ancient ruins of Glassewater, a city built upon an obsidian expanse of blasted black-glass that sank into the dessert when Yuuléna struck the Hartland several hundred years ago, leaving only the cascades untouched. Some of the buildings of ancient Glassewater can be seen peaking out of Lake Emrha when the water line is low.

Lake Emrha is occasionally referred to as ‘The Well of Weeping Waters’ and holds a place of deep superstition in the hearts of many locals.

Life in Serriglasse

The streets of Serriglasse are always flush with activity, the air abuzz.
While students groan at the growing early morning noise, nursing their weary bones AND skulls, the locals continue as they always have. A bright sun beats down upon the city, it’s towering buildings and criss-cross of richly coloured canopies casting long morning shadows across cobbled roads. The bazaars and market streets bustle with daily preparations as dock workers get their barges ready for transporting salvage across the lake. Older men and women, grey and world-weary, cluster around small street-side tables as they drink tea, gossip, smoke pipes and heckle the younger generations that pass them by.

Younger children flit between alley-ways kicking rag-balls and duelling with driftwood swords. Everybody knows everybody in Serriglasse and everyone does everything together. Students who come to study at the academy often think themselves the exceptional talent, the individual who will change the world, prodigies who need no help. Soon they find themselves softened by the relentless warmth of their new neighbours, their edges worn away, their bellies and souls filled.

Such is life in Serriglasse.

  • History

    (666 PD - Present)

In the years after the coup in Regalis and the dissolution of The Monarchs a great many tribulations rocked the Great Barrier Desert. Serriglasse remained insulated from much of this, but the metropolitan city-state was not free of any challenges.
  • With the curse over Barrakhad broken, many of the bandit gangs and monsters that had used the territory for shelter from the more lawful elements of the Great Barrier Desert now had their freedom returned and nowhere to hide. Bloody conflict erupted across several coastal territories as numerous villages and tradelines suffered raids from roving bandit-gangs.
  • The nation of Ghanzi exerted further pressure on the mayor of Serriglasse, their clergy asserting that the illusory golden sands that drifted from the cascades were a a vestige of their golden god Ghanzia, who gave up his essence and form to protect them from Yuuléna's decent before disintegrating into the golden sands that comprise the dunes of Ghanzi.
  • The neighbouring merchant-state of Gatriolla continued to try and sneak its slimy influence further into Serriglasse.
  • The Skyfire Freehold of Norieme split apart and crash-landed after a salvage mishap, several chunks reigning down over the Seraph Sand Cascades and wider Great Barrier Desert.
