Fomorian Calendar

The calendar of the Fomorians, based on the cycles of the Empire's capital world, Elatha.

Most of Known Space uses the Avalonian Calendar , since the elves were there first and have been using it forever. But the orcs wanted little, if anything, to do with the elves. Furthermore, when they arrived on Elatha, they felt it would be important, and powerfully symbolic, to embrace the calendar of their new home.   The natural cycles of Elatha were regular enough to appeal to their orderly minds. Elatha takes exactly 360 days to circle their sun, named Balor. Their days had an almost-perfect 24 hour cycle as well. And the moon, named Cethlenn for their major lunar goddess, takes exactly 30 days to make its orbit around Elatha. These regular cycles were one of the major reasons why the founders of the Balorians chose Elatha to settle.   This was, of course, before they knew about Tarrak Garr, "Harbinger of War," the comet that makes a rapid annual cycle in and out of the system, passing perilously close to Elatha. This yearly cycle creates a series of dangerous seasonal storms, which define all life on Elatha.   These two calendars do not progress at the same rate. The Fomorians lose four days every Avalonian year.   The Fomorian Empire declared war on the elves on the Spring Equinox of the Year 350 from the Founding. That date corresponded to 3 Rose Moon, 5040 Avalonian Calendar.

Days of the Week:

  1. Dêrkarr'akii: "Father's Day"
  2. Mĕkarra'kii: "Mother's Day"
  3. Dĕkârr'akii: "Uncle's Day"
  4. Dĕkârrâ'kii: "Aunt's Day"
  5. Na'kórr'akii: "(Blood) Brother's Day"
  6. Sĕkarra'kii: "Sister's Day"

Because the elves were probably the first into the stars, the Avalonian Calendar is the standard calendar of Known Space.

Ok, I have a question. In looking at this, how much impact have the orcs had on the development of this calendar over time? Because I'm wondering, is there an ancient festival or holiday involving graf? Like perhaps an ancient harvest holiday for gathering the beans used in graf? I was curious because graf is so important to the orcish culture, I thought it might get reflected in a calendar they use?

I meant to respond to this ages ago, and thought I had! I'm sure they do! I was just establishing the basic calendar that I needed to use the dating system I was trying to work out, and to prepare timelines. I'm picturing a week-long festival or something similar, right around the time of the coffee bean harvest. There will be holy days and commemorations too, which will expand as I flesh out my orcs more. :) But thank you, I had not thought of a graf festival, and I should have, and I sure will be incorporating it!
