Innix

Overview

Innix are large, herbivorous mammals commonly known for their gentle nature and their large curved tusks. They tend to roam in herds across the lower mountain slopes or over grassy hills in the cooler northern regions. They are predominantly a wild species, but a few farmers have recently begun to keep them as cattle for their thick wool, and as working beasts in the fields.

Physiology

Measured to the shoulder, innix grow to an average height of 8ft (2.4m), with the males being only slightly larger than the females. The colours of their wooly coats range from dark browns to light greys, most often bearing a dappled variation. Males often have two pairs of tusks, while females have only one pair. Innix use their tusks to scrape bark off trees and to defend against predators.

Behaviour

Slow and gentle creatures, innix live in herds of a dozen or more. They are highly social and have a close-knit community, with no obvious hierarchical structure. They are highly protective of their herd family, but have also been known to extend that protection to other creatures. Despite their generally sedentary way of life, they can employ surprising bursts of speed when it is needed. If a predator threatens, they will quickly form a tight circle around the young and vulnerable, using their curved tusks to create a defensive barrier.

I gotta say, I'm so glad for whoever decided to introduce these innix 'round here. They make the plowing of these fields so much easier, maybe not quicker, but it sure saves my back and arms. I won't lie to you though, I was afraid of them when I first saw them. They're just so... big. Of course, they're also very gentle and patient, especially with the little ones who love to try to climb them sometimes. They're a real blessing 'round here.
