Aramis

The man, the myth, the cryptid - descendant of a long lineage of railwaymen in charge of the North Tow Station and its surrounding area's rail network.

It's A Thankless Job

Seldom seen behind the scenes of the daily and nightly railroad operations of the allied Southern Coasts and glad that way, it is nevertheless possible to find some of the more elusive workers if you know where you need to look. It's not advisable to show up unannounced, however, unless the goal is to encounter a very upset switch keeper throwing a coffeepot at your head.   Every now and then, he might stick his head out of a window to observe a passing train or hand out orders - always wearing his red cap as is according to regulations - but that seems to be the only occasion where he ever gets fresh air and sometimes even some sunlight and trying to talk to him unprompted in those moments will only lead to being ignored (or having a coffeepot thrown at your head).   When he received a prior notice and permits you entry to his office, on the other hand, Aramis is a lot more hospitable and pleasant to be around than your average railwayman (especially if you brought coffee and aren't too talkative). And if he isn't, you ended up near Avignon at the office of his brother instead, who goes by the same name and is otherwise almost indistinguishable from him as well (like their father and uncle are) but much less socialized.

But Somebody's Gotta Do It

Communicating with the switch keeper can be impossible or very straightforward, depending on how familiar you are with the very formulaic way he talks to people and expects them to respond. That is, if he deigns to talk to them in person. His prefered way of interacting with other people is via radio to begin with. But paradoxically enough, radio communications are the only kind of interaction where he does not stick to and insist on using his meticulously scripted conversation style; instead, he'll casually indulge in small talk with whichever coworkers happen to be in radio range of the station as long as nothing out of the usual happens.   From his normally soft-spoken, even sheepish attitude and his reclusive lifestyle, new hires often assume that Aramis is sort of a pushover. But everyone who has caused trouble to the smooth and safe train operations by acting carelessly knows that "M'sieur Aiguilleur" can and will raise his voice and isn't shy at all to swear like a trooper. Long-time colleagues will also know that should they not treat him with all the due respect, he won't hesitate to return the favor by having them and their cargo sit on the side track for however many hours it takes for them to learn humility (and they better bring some coffee next time).

Entering the switch keeper's office also means listening 24/7 to the only record he owns. No, he does not understand the lyrics. Yes, he has them memorized and will sing along.
