The Impasse

Though many have tried to climb to its icy peaks, The Impasse gets its name for a reason. Anyone who has made it to the peak at one time or another never return, and those who return never find anything new. The Impasse is a towering mountain range in northeastern Lutar Minohn which has been a constant source of wonder (and frustration). Its peaks slope up very quickly before becoming coated in ice. This makes for a very difficult climb, even for those with magic or flight. The most successful approach so far has been to try to chart a path through the peaks, at the lowest points possible. The presence of dangerous beasts has made even these journeys very treacherous, not to mention threats of avalanches or rockslides.
The dwarves of Clan Stoutstone (See: Brillenia Stoutstone) make their homes within the base of the Impasse but have never found a way through, winding this way and that through the stone. The people of the Stoutstone Clan (and others) often ascribe this mountain range's existence to legends of Maphin, whom they say created these mountains to protect the people of Lutar Minohn from whatever horrors lie beyond, and very few even try to push through to the other side.
It is also difficult to go around this mountain range in any direction. To the south lies The Wylds, a forest filled with horrors left behind by the gods, and to their south, The Myst is so volatile that even those who don't wield magic often succumb to the arcane storms. To their north, the seas are just as treacherous, ravaged by rocks, constant storms, and sea monsters.
