The gentle giants known as Longhorn Toms are an original species of oxen dating back as far as there are records.
Beasts of burden naturally resilient to cold, heat, and who have the intelligence to forage for food, water, and protect their young within their herds with a tenacity not found in today's breeds. The natural life expectancy of the species is 70+ years, able to calf every two years, yielding twins in most cases.
I cannot say I know what they were used for in ancient times, but few of these giant blue beasts can be found among the races, with the exception of the University of Magic. The mägo continue to breed the Toms to pull their wagons, for milk, meat, and when required, as a source of life force to perform specific magical enchantments.
The most famous of the Longhorns are those who pull the Wolen: The Wagon of Olen, known as 'Fred' and 'Fred'. Beasts loved and cared for by their master, the Driver.
Their harness, embedded with enchantments of food and water, provide nourishment to the pair, while markings upon their hooves allow them to move in any direction their master commands, without hinderance.
What I mean by that is, if you're in the way of the Wolen, you better move.
With your comment in the notification, I just knew I had to read it! The Toms remind me distinctly of Babe the Blue Ox but probably much smaller and still just as cute and pettable but that might just be the cowgirl in me talking :)
