A "shelf cat" is a slang term for any domesticated feline creature among the Iskari people.
The term has also been used to describe a kept woman--or a female who prefers to remain at home and not venture out into society. A woman who needs to be provided for and will not perform domesticated labor to support herself or her family ties.

A shelf cat was first mentioned in the book Prelude to a Hero.
