Horned Bear
The Great Strife saw the mighty armies of the Taxlatl marching westward across the lands along the Farsea coast, bringing with them their great war-beasts. Inevitably, the occasional beast would escape or be somehow left behind. Some of these creatures survived in the years after the war, and - likely with the aid of the foul mutagens that gave rise to other abominations - adapted to a life in the Oakwood. Sages believe this is how the massive Trihorn beasts of the Taxlatl mutated into the small, but still quite dangerous creatures known as Horned Bears.
Laurels & Loot Statblock
Horned Bears have the same general size and body plan of the common Black Bear, and have similar diets. But similarities end here. The Horned Bear is not a true bear at all; it is not even mammalian. These are warm-blooded reptilian creatures, with bodies covered in thick armor of scale-like skin much like an alligator or crocodile. The elephantine feet of the creatures have evolved to now sport large, hooked claws that can be used to rip apart trees to reach insect colonies, or to slash and shred prey. Their beak-like jaws, formerly suited to a herbivorous lifestyle, are now filled with cutting and tearing teeth that augment the ability of the sharp beak itself to rip prey apart.
The broad, armor-plated neck frill of their ancestors has shrunk, but has not disappeared entirely. Likewise, the three sharp, pointed horns that adonr the creature's head remain, though they are proportionately shorter. They are still formidable, though, and are employed by the creature when they charge any prey or threat as large or larger than they are.
