Exposition
In the Coachella Valley before The Cataclysm, there was a figure known as The Windwalker . They dreamed about that event before it happened and tried to warn people about the earthquake that broke the cities in that part of the world. The Windwalker and the Cahuilla (the local native tribe) had encountered an entity they refer to only as a shadow or him. The Gunslinger Order in the area knows of this entity. The wind spirit in the area is known to protect them from this shadow after they have killed.
In the meantime, Graeme Walsh and his sister Piper Walsh are in Fort Whistler at The Sacred Armoury to observe the proper rites for Piper having joined the Gunslinger Order and Graeme having just received his silver spurs. They don't know it yet, but things are not going to proceed as expected in this time-honoured rite.
Aquilla Levan has been having dreams of the earth shaking, of The Relic, and of Dame Esther. She steals The Relic from the Cahuilla elders after reading the Windwalker's journals and deciding the Relic holds the answers to her dreams. Dame Esther chases her into the desert and towards Fault Canyon.
Conflict
The earth spirit that lives in the San Andreas fault (or at least the part in the Coachella Valley) has been communing with the other disenfranchised and unhappy earth spirits along the rest of the fault. He has also been comumuning with the spirits of other nearby faults. His goal is simple: to trigger another earthquake as large as the one that was set off by The Cataclysm.
