Hewn Sea

Formation

When Maru created the mortal plane, he thrust his hand deep below the surface between The Litoric Islands and Anhara. As he tore back the ground, he created a great trench of water to separate these areas, and cast the dirt and stone aside to form the Delved Isle.

Fauna

"We had landed on the north-western tip of the Boreal North, and began a trek across the ice in search of tribal fishing grounds. As soon as we landed the men heard cracking ice, like tunneling, and within five miles, they demanded to turn back out of creatures they thought lurked below." - Marcolo Matei, Wide Blue Beyond
Its depths are dark and deep, so much of its life is unknown. However, Nemura, goddess of the seas and all its creatures who see the sun, has populated it with countless fish, particularly in the areas of the The Litoric Islands and coasts of Anhara.
While life towards the surface is abundant and a great gift to the diets of those who can catch them, deep in the dark, where the gods cannot pry, lie untold horrors. Sailors of the Litoric Fleet tell of great masses, inky dark and thick as tar, bubbling up below the surface when seamen have dived too deep. During the chaos of the Frozen Wars, thus far uninvestigated claims of sailors point towards having seen long, serpent-like, forms moving rapidly beneath the ice at night. While these legends and more are thus far unsubstantiated, all tales hold a kernel of truth, and deeper diving into the depths of the Hewn Sea may reveal gods-know-what forms of life.   *There are some disagreements about whether the Hewn Sea includes the Serpent Sea, where the primary reports of Serpent Sea Snakes comes from, however that body of water is influenced by ice sheets, not divine intervention.
