Sirs Brodie, Fane, & Hamlyn

Historical Overview

Founding

The auction house of Sirs Brodie, Fane, & Hamlyn was founded in 252 AM by Reynaud Brodie. At the time a customs agent at the Rookery, Brodie was in charge of the seizure of books from passing ships.   To facilitate the growth of the Library of Somae, House Thewisy policy has long been to seize books and editions not yet in their collection from ships docking anywhere in their territory. The original would be kept, and a copy made and returned to the vessel. Many captains opted to leave rather than wait the lengthy delay for a copy.
"Allow me to entreat - Ladies, Gentlemen - do permit me to put this ineffable piece of elegance under your protection - observe this extraordinary literary jewel!" - Auctioneer of Sirs Brodie, Fane, & Hamlyn
Reynaud Brodie would purchase, or perhaps take, the unretrieved copies and resell them. Given the exclusivity of books at the time, and the rare nature inherent in a book the Library would have bothered to seize, these fetched a considerable sum. Brodie began his sales at Altrarie, Somae's first coffeehouse, to great acclaim.

Growth

With his early auctioneering success, Reynaud Brodie was joined by Maelys Fane and Trystaan Hamlyn, professors at the Academy Somae. Their partnership, and the creation of Somae's first auctioneering firm, gave the company official sanction and allowed the group to negotiate a profit-sharing deal with the Crimson Quill.   By the end of the life of now-Sir Brodie, the last of the three to pass, the firm constructed their first genuine auction house on Tatirlae (Exchange Street), in the heart of Somae's new financial district. True to their origins, the firm has maintained a small coffeehouse in the entrance to their now-grand auction house, much like the similarly situated Eastmarch Bank & Trust.
