The Mire Thoroughfare

Historical Overview

Constructed in 355 of the Age of Rule, the Mire Thoroughfare revolutionized travel east out of the Coquet Heights. Previously, travelers and cargo flowed by sea between Port Castellion and Etan's Stream, an expensive and lengthy journey. Overland travel was hindered by the dangerous nature of the path between The Promenade and Gaffton, the first large settlement in the Vestral Downs.   In the early days of Anhara, this was a particularly perilous route, running between the forest-bordered mountains of the Coquet Heights and the dangerous cliffs along the seaside. The peacefulness of this sparsely-populated area was often interrupted by mudslides, disease, and the dangerous creatures inhabiting the early salt swamps.
"Addendum; no matter how long you have visited The Promenade, never think yourself smarter than the Mire Thoroughfare, or you'll be in muck up to your belt." - Merchants' Roadmap of the Coquet Heights
As House Prominere grew more comfortable in their difficult geographical position, they formalized their whaling industry and saw a population and commercial boom. While this allowed them to expand control over their holdings beyond the city alone, their newfound wealth would need to be put to use taming the swamps. This began the ten-year process of completing one of Anhara's most important infrastructure projects, the draining and retention of swamps to create the Mire Thoroughfare.

Route

Starting in The Promenade in the north and heading southeast along the coast, the Mire Thoroughfare links the capital of House Prominere to their scattered coastal holdings. In order, these are Marshrun and Carphook (formerly of House Prominere, now of House Meadowbrook) before the Thoroughfare crosses over Firstbrook and enters the Vestral Downs. Thereafter it runs through House Meadowbrook's towns of Erinview and Gaffton, before turning south and running along North Etan's Stream to The Meadows. Two crossings are available, both of which are ferries across the Stream to Claireport and Dunnferry.
