Galactic Highway Traffic Police

Controlling highways spanning trillions of light years is a difficult task, a task for the Galactic Highway Traffic Police. These highly trained units of law enforcers utilise advanced machinery and gadgets to catch criminals and fugitives, either breaking highway laws or using the Galactic Highway to escape.

The organisation has largely remained the same for the past twelve million years.

Galactic Units

Every galaxy has a different Highway Code, and it is unreasonable for one officer to memorise several codes. Each galaxy has a different unit of officers, anywhere between hundreds to millions of officers. The number of officers greatly depends on the size of the galaxy, number and length of highways and roads, and average levels of criminal activity.

Each unit has their unique badge, next to the Traffic Police Logo, present on every single uniform, vehicle, weapon and machinery under the police force. Officers have the right to pull over any vehicle they deem unfit to travel along either the goldstreams or silverstreams. Each unit has its unique ID, and each officer has their own ID attached to the unit's ID.

Did you hear Michael moved galaxies?
Wait, really? Aw, I'll miss him.
Yeah. He's gotta buy a whole other uniform because they couldn't stitch a new logo on. That's like two year's salary.

Galactic Highway Codes

The Galactic Highway Code is a set of rules, information, and guides to travelling along the Galactic Highway. Each galaxy has a different Highway Code that tends to the culture of its own people. These documents are regularly updated and come in both written and digital forms, accessible in any library in space by law.

Most Galactic Highway Codes are predominantly made up of customs, as opposed to legal requirements. Officers cannot incriminate someone for not following customs, but it can and will be used against them in the court of law. Legal requirements in every Highway Code is written in bold and is highlighted, so that it cannot be missed.

Galactic Highway Codes cover highway hierarchies and various road signs. They also enforce speed limits, the use of alcohol and drugs while driving, and present the dangers of driving within space, of which there are many.

You must abide by presented speed limits at all times. Ensure that you remain below speed limits at all times. Speeding individuals will be fined, and/or imprisoned.

Enforcing Traffic Laws

Eggy Placeholder by Dr Emily Vair-Turnbull

Considered quite a gruelling workday is sitting at intersections and managing traffic flow. As highways are extremely large it can be hard to notice some traffic signs, many indicating which direction to drive in. Officers perched at intersections guide people into the correct lanes and catch any stragglers. People unable to find the right lanes, driving into the opposite side of the highways, are given cautions. Two cautions are turned into a formal warning, and two formal warnings are turned into a fine and a year's ban from the Galactic Highway.

Officers enforce speed limits and other traffic laws. Traffic officers have the ability to pull over any vehicle and request registration. Unlicensed vehicles are towed and drivers will be fined. Due to the high stress environment with millions, sometimes billions, of spacecrafts passing through highways in a single shift, officers are very rarely lenient andwill not hesitate to arrest.

Access to the Galactic Highway is a privilege, not a right. Break this privilege and you will be incarcerated.
— Rohin Alahei, current GHTP President

Resources

With such an important job, Galactic Highway Traffic Police are often given a large amount of resources to successfully do their jobs. They are one of few people with access to bronzestreams. This section of the Galactic Highway utilises portals and crossroad dimensions to travel incredible distances in seconds. They are often used to capture criminals in high-speed chases.

Officers are also given rudimentary plasma guns and tasers for their own protection. Traffic policecrafts are decked out with useful resources such as spare fuel, reinforced rope and tractor beams for towing small spacecrafts, and powerful magnets for moving larger cargo spacecrafts.
