Scourge of Earth

CW: Human extinction, death, viruses, graphic descriptions

In just two weeks, the human species was wiped out by the Scourge of Earth. This supervirus swept through ten billion inhabitants of planet Earth, leaving no survivors.

The Scourge has only ever affected the human species, even when infecting others. Many presume this is a biological weapon, based on its properties.

This virus attacked the nervous system, causing muscle spasms so intense it fractured bones. Upon reaching the brain, it would start to melt individual parts at random.

A Global Massacre

Humanity had taken its very first steps into outer space. Divina V5 was the first spacecraft to venture beyond the outer banks of Earth's star system. It made history for humanity. Every nation of Earth joined together to celebrate this victory, and it would be humanity's greatest milestone.

The Scourge was picked up from the Ancient Altar, a mysterious artifact floating just beyond the bounds of the Kinosmo System. The spacecraft approached it and a tractor beam brought the altar into a holding cell. The altar was examined and a latch was opened, releasing the virus.

The Scourge remained dormant until the spacecraft had returned to Earth. It immediately swarmed the Americas, travelling globally through international transportation. In just a week the Scourge had reached every major population on the planet, and host animals carried the virus to isolated populations.

I love an article that poses as many questions as it answers!   Has anyone considered resurrecting the human race via genetic engineering? There would be plenty of material to work with, and it would be interesting to see what or who came out to stop the project. If someone went to the trouble of making a custom virus, they’d probably be opposed to anyone bringing the species back.

Oooh, that's really interesting! Human science, philosophy, and all of that has been intensely studied and adapted for science throughout the Milky Way, so there certainly would be some benefit to resurrecting some humans. But there definitely would be some backlash, and *definitely* from the people that may or may not have killed them off... :eyes:

Devastating! I wonder if the exact symptoms were planned and determined to be the most effective at achieving a certain goal or if there were other motives behind such painful deaths...

If only there were people in the Yonderverse well known to take things to the absolute extreme, for no reason at all... *glares at one of my summer camp entries*
