The In-Between

The In-Between is is all the empty space within the range of our planet, that is not the planet itself. That description might not make much sense for a traditional ball-shaped planet. For our planet however, it makes a lot of sense. You see, Tunoda is torus-shaped and has a large, mostly empty, in-between space.
Mostly empty. Not entirely.

Geography

Over the lifespan of the planet, asteroid collisions and earthquakes have resulted in earthly masses floating in the In-Between. Each floating mass seems to move at its own speed and trajectory, resulting different constellations with respect to the planet surface. Some are large and move at slow speeds, others are smaller and move quicker.
Some small floating islands have acquired magical means to influence acceleration and course.

Ecosystem

The empty "sky" part of the In-Between is uninhabited except for the occasional airborne creature on a long-distance journey. Depending on the material and size of a floating mass, it might be inhabited. Some are even inhabited by humanoids. Those who grew up on floating islands often describe gravity to be more of a burden when they visit the planet surface.

Ecosystem Cycles

Seasonal cycles on floating islands depend on the cyclic trajectory of an island and the seasonal cycle of the surface that is near. The combination of these two factors can lead to some non-traditional seasons. Some floating islands only experience winter as their trajectory is lined up with winter locations around the planet's surface. Other floating islands cycle through all four seasons multiple times in a year.

Tourism

Some stationary floating islands close to densely populated areas on the planet's surface are popular as touristic attractions. They provide a unique view of the underlying surface and often offer overnight accomodation.
Non-stationary floating islands with magical means of influencing their trajectory are used by the elite for long-distance travel. Though most do not have great speeds, they provide more comfort than travel via ship due to size and ability to provide fresh nutrition.
