Padded maille armor is the most common form of protection for those that can afford it. A sturdy, padded jacket (called a gambeson) is worn closest to the body and a maille short or hauberk made of riveted rings on top. This offers fantastic protection against most forms of attack, especially slashing strikes with bladed weapons, but suffers against ranged weapons such as bows and crossbows, or dedicated stabbing weapons such as rapiers, sideswords and thinner spears.
Commonly worn together with a skull cap or simpler helmet for head protection.
