I walked down the streets of Haalten, a nice simple town on the edge of the Winter Court. Of course, given the name of this part of the Feywild, it was nearly always snowing, with a near constant overcast that always gave this part its own unique feel. I continued down the street and rounded the corner to stand before a small coffee shop near the rear of the town. The front door was just propped open with a small stack of book, so I went ahead and slipped into the building. I only took a quick look around to make note of the patrons before heading over to the counter to order a simple and fast drink. After receiving my drink, I went ahead and sat down at a seemingly random table that was already occupied.
I looked over to the other person at the table, another Fae by the name of Andraste, but sometimes that was quite the mouthful to say quickly, so he of course shortened her name to make it easier on himself “Hey there Star, weather is quite nice today wouldn’t you say?”
She Looked over at him seemingly confused by his presence in the first place. “Lisserym? Is that you”
I chuckled at her question “No, its someone else that you were meeting today, looking for a date or something?”
She groaned and shook her head “I wouldn’t have to guess if you didn’t look so different every time we met.”
“What am I supposed to do, just walk around without any kind of disguise, we both know I’m wanted.” I looked both ways in feigned suspicion “Plus I heard there was a Spring Court guard around here today”
Had she any eyes I’m certain she would’ve rolled them “Whatever, I was able to confirm that the last group you escorted actually made it out, and the guard has no idea where they went, they actually made it all out.”
I nodded triumphantly “Of course they did, I’m good at what I do ya’know. So, do you have the next batch ready to go?”
Star reached under the table and handed him a small envelope “This is who will be there and where you need to go, its only five. It’s a smaller group just like you asked for” She paused for a moment before continuing to speak “Are you sure that Lily is ready to start doing this with you, she doesn’t have the experience that you do.”
“Of course she is. She’s eager and ready to please. And she wants to help me out here”
“Could you not go one whole conversation with saying something idiotic, could you seriously answer my question?”
“Yes, yes. Lily is gonna be fine, I’ve taught her how to handle herself and what to do in an actual fight, if it comes to that. Even took her on a practice run the other night, though only half of it was any actual practice.”
Star only paused for a moment before suddenly getting up “I’m just gonna go, I really don’t want to speak to you more than I have to. I hope your bravado isn’t misplaced.” Star left the coffee shop and disappeared into the snow.
I went ahead and finished my drink before getting up myself, I left a small tip the for the coffee shop before I left, they had a great barista, and he certainly deserved the extra tips, especially for his outfit. I took a confusing path out of the town to make sure no one could easily follow me out of it. Once outside that town and in an area where I was sure that no one would be watching, I shifted into a small bird and took flight, heading back home.
