Session 1: Journey to Greenest
General Summary
The characters joined a caravan heading south from Waterdeep stopping at various settlements. They all had various reasons for heading that way, some were looking for adventure, wealth or entertainment, others had reasons of their own....
For the past several days, you have been traveling a road
that winds lazily across the rolling grasslands of the
Greenfields. Sundown is approaching when you top a
rise and see the town of Greenest just a few short miles
away. But instead of the pleasant, welcoming town you
expected, you see columns of black smoke rising from
burning buildings, running figures that are little more than
dots at this distance, and a dark, winged shape wheeling
low over the keep that rises above the center of the town.
Greenest is being attacked by a dragon!
The caravan immediately turned around and headed back to the last settlement that had passed through, leaving the characters stranded and looking down on a burning town! The party had little time for introductions as they headed into Greenest, the town was ablaze and the streets filled with smoke. Through the smoke and growing darkness the characters saw figures running back and forth, the poor visibility made it difficult to tell who was friend or foe. However, it soon became clear that foe's were present, as the party made it's way down a street they were spotted by red robed figures carrying swords and torches, the strangers immediately attacked the party. Though they had not known each other long the adventurers coordinated their actions well and their attackers soon lay dead in the street. As they continued into the town the characters came across a scene unfolding, a family were fighting for their lives against a large group of kobolds intent on their destruction or capture. The mother fought bravely against the attackers with sword and spear but was hard-pressed, as the character arrived she went down after a vicious blow from a dagger. The characters joined the fray and fought their way to the woman defending her against further attack. The druid in the party, a Firbolg known only as 'The Giant' managed to staunch her wounds defending her from further harm whilst his companions dispatched the kobolds. Several of the evil, scaly creatures made a break for the small house into which the man and children had taken shelter and a fierce melee ensued as the father held them off aided by Korg arriving through a window. Citrus, the youngster of the party, managed to get off a well-aimed spell through the same window to knock another of the attackers to the ground. Once all of the attackers were silenced the companions spoke to the family. Zanziphar healed the woman, Linan Swift, but she was too weak to stand and Cuth, her husband, suggested that they all make their way to the keep in the centre of Greenest as quickly as they could. The party agreed to help and began to make their way towards the keep between the houses avoiding the streets of the town. The extra baggage of the wounded man and woman with small children made the going slow. Unfortunately they soon met opponents again and were forced to fight off an attack from more cultists. At this point the party abandoned stealth, it was getting late and they felt the increasing presence of cultist and kobolds make evasion impossible. Assuming the role of cultists escorting prisoners, the party took to the road leading to the keep and moved fast. It was not long before they came across further opponents though, this time a more senior commander from the ranks of the attackers. Some quick-thinking and smooth-talking convinced the enemy commander that they were genuine cultists and they headed on their way, turning North away from the keep under the watchful eye of the commander. As soon as he and his guards moved away the party once again turned towards the keep only to run into a large group of kobold raiders celebrating their victory and looting houses. It seemed the kobolds were in no mood to fight however and took the disguised party members for cultists. At this point the party decided to just make for the keep as quickly as possible. They began to head across the open ground and up the slope towards the entrance gate. One more opponent lay in their way however, the large blue dragon circling the keep!
There was nothing else for it, exhausted from the many fights, with wounded townsfolk to get to safety and no hope of fighting off a dragon the party had no choice but to hurry on their path and pray that the dragon would not see them. By luck and some good timing the companions got to the keep entrance as the dragon moved around the back of the keep and the doors opened to welcome them in. Inside the keep it was clear that the town had had the worst of the fight, wounded soldiers and weary, frightened townsfolk lay around. The crying of children and angry shouts from the men on the battlements greeted the companions. The roar of the dragon could be heard above the keep as the hideous beast circled the isolated bastion. On the battlements stood Governor Nighthill, a stern looking human in his sixties, with one arm in a sling and bandage around his head it was clear that he had taken an active role in the defence. He seemed to have shrugged off his injuries however and shouted commands to his soldiers, seeming almost to revel in the conflict. The adventurers climbed to the battlements and looked out over the burning town, figures could still be seen running to and fro with burning torches. Governor Nighthill approached the party and congratulated them on making it safely to the Keep with the townsfolk they had rescued. He asked his second-in-command Castellan Escobert, a stout red-bearded dwarf to hold the keep and led the characters away for a debriefing and ask a favour of them. The companions excepted his command, exhausted and uncertain of their future plans....
