Session 2: Children in the market, magic at the temple Report
General Summary
During this session, the group started off in the morning, 6 days after the last session in the common room. Maverick informed them about the trip he had when they all went to the junkyard. They were offered a job, should they want it, to spy on an alley (behind the markets) known as the "Smuggler's Way". The person he met said they were part of the law, with a badge, despite their dark, cloaked appearance. Still, Maverick said that even if they looked scary, when they talked, they weren't. He explained the job would be to spy on the alley and people in it, by pretending to play or hang out in the area, being subtle and unseen, and report anything interesting. Names, locations, trades were of special interest. The group had concerns about how dangerous this could be, and Maverick added this would be conditional to the group following a few rules:
- Never go alone
- Never go at night
- If anything happens, safety first, job integrity second
This meant that if they had to run and yell for help, jeoperdizing their "cover", then so be it. They were doing this for a bit of extra coin, and because this, was to stop smugglers apparently bring things that were harming people, especially those with less money in their homes. But this wasn't a "to the death" loyalty commitment. He then told everyone to think about it and get back to him, to do some shopping and get each a cloak (investment in their success from their patron) at the market, while he finalized the information. He promised to give the contact's name on his return.
The group headed to the market, where everyone got strange versions of the cloak. But first, as they arrived there, they found their friend Damaia, outside, having an altercation with what seemed to be a bully. The boy, Ander, was holding one of her fine silks away and preventing her from getting it back, looking smug at her clear frustration and anger. The group intervened, with Twig dropping the boy to the ground and Youka doing a spit take to him, and Damaia got her silk back. Eevan admonished the use of violence and tried to reason with Ander, who only acted insulted, and insulting. Astara pulled him aside for a show and display of enduring kindness despite Ander's attempt to reject her, until he blushed, got flustered and stormed off (or ran away) with a last insult. All closed with a mind message from Eevan to wish them a good day, which gave the boy a pause and visible shiver, before running away still.
Damaia thanked the group for everyone's help and with her parents, assisted their purchases. Most just bought the cloak straight out, while Astara used the sack cloth she found at the junkyard and asked to have that tailored into a cloak with fur lining in the hood (black fur) - and a hem that could later be cut to still fit at a later age, and Eavan just layered 3 sets of common clothes, a robe and a hat. Youka got a premium as they offered to work for the tailor shop and help guard their goods, which they agreed to have them 2 evenings a week. A bit of additional shopping (and trash can diving) was also done, where each got to spend a few coins.
GAME BREAK
The twins went off to visit their "Auntie", Eriny'eh (vassal of Arawai) to the temple of the Sovereign Host. She welcomed them and seemed very happy to see them both doing well. Astara talked about the job, and Eriny'eh re-affirmed the importance of staying safe, but also congratulated them for getting a job. She then delivered good news, where a sect of elven druids, known as Sela's Path, were coming to settle here outside the walls. This would take them years to achieve fully, as they are very careful when settling, ensuring no nature, plant or animal, is hindered. Envoys would be first to arrive soon, and they have a daughter in the same age as the twins, by the name of Miri. She asked the twins if they would welcome her, and they agreed. The vassal then noticed the twin's friends had arrived, standing at the temple's entrance, and specifically Nina, whom she called over. She said she sensed something in the young elf, and could identify with her. She told her she likely had a gift with magic, then the vassal closed her eyes, gathered energy and summoned a spectral looking clone of her arm and hand (cast of mage hand), informing Nina she probably could. Nina closed her eyes and replicated, and with a touch of magic from Eriny'eh, unlocked her own mage hand.
As nina practiced, Eevan and Twig spotted a young halfing sitting in a corner, talking to a mouse. The halfing was basically dressed in a sackcloth with holes for arms, and filthy head to toes. A quick introduction later, they were known as Varris, young female associated in some ways to the local stables. They confessed liking animals more than people, and find kinship to Eavan in their fashion clothes, and to Twig in their love of animals. A bit bored, she suggested a place to find cool things, and playfully lead the group past Ehverit and in a nearby alley. Ehverit tagged along. There, they stealthed along the wall and found unwatched barrels. Ehverit and Twig found some valuables inside, as did Varris. However, failing their stealth check, Eevan pulled a sack of ball bearings, making a ruckus that drew in attention. Varris told them to bolt and headed out themselves, but Eevan wanted to talk to local there seeming angry. Twig and Ehverit stood with their friends, but Twig tried to convince them to leave. Eevan put the ball bearings down and apologized, and they stopped their charge, instead telling the kids to get out, this wasn't a place for kids. Which they did leave.
Everyone then went home, and the session ended active roleplay.
Mechanical leveling up was done, increasing score, and downtime was covered. It was informed that Maverick's contact name is Nivellan, and that they felt pretty assured about the job's authenticity.
- Astara had a good run with Maverick's work, earning some gold and practicing earning information through the body languages of others, earning herself a proficiency.
- Eevan took the job but had a bad run of it, instead landing in jail frequently and worked on talents to convince the guards.... not to let them out, but to share with him, about their life and their day, earning a persuasion proficiency. They also sent gifts to Ander in attempts to diminish the gap between the group and him.
- Ehverit also took part into the spying mission and honed his investigation skill, studying not only the words of the people they were spying on, but the clues, scratches and such left behind. They also had visits and visited Damaia, practicing enough Infernal language to learn to both read and writing of it.
- Nina took part in the mission a bit, but spent a lot of time going to the temple to practice their mage hand, and visited the smith forge next to the temple, meeting one of the Smith's son, Kitahn. There, she could watch them at work, and earned herself her own smith's tools and proficiency with them.
- Trajan... (was not at the session, will discuss to iron out this section)
- Twig also took part in the job and focuses mainly on his ability to be unnoticed and unseen throughout, earning proficiency in stealth. They also spent some time in the woods to study plants and animals, and discovered that other folks lived outside the city walls (and not just the farmers), finding a plant covered hut in the Southern woods, and a home in the trees in the Western woods.
- Youka.... (had to leave early, will confer to decide this section)
