Session 12 - Aboard the Emperor Report

Sunday 23 Patchwall (continued)

  Having dispatched the arachnid creatures loitering around the shrine of Lolth, Leeroy and Mina descend the stairs at the rear of the cabin. As Leeroy steps into the lower cabin below, a high-pitched whirring sound can be heard as a spinning blade whizzes through his legs in a narrow miss and heads up the stairs, clipping Mina along the way. Leeroy clears the path and Mina quickly jumps over the spot where the blades retract before disappearing. As the rest of the party waits upstairs, Leeroy smashes his halberd into the deck trying to disable the blade. Unfortunately, the deck chips, but doesn't show where the blade resides. Leeroy reluctantly backs away to allow the rest of the party down, each jumping over the spot where the blade hides.   The party scouts a room filled with webbing, bones, and debris. As Kyra reaches the other side of the room she notices a large swarming mass of spiders that then traverses the room leaving a wall of webs in it's path and attacks Karia. Karia deftly avoids the multitude of spiders within the swarm and the party quickly dispatches this Webspinner swarm before exploring the rest of the kitchen that contains a trap door that has a bar blocking it from opening to this side.   Leaving the trap door alone, Leeroy opens the door heading toward the bow. An orc bellows out, "In the name of Lolth, I condemn you to the Demonweb!" thereby dashing his attempt to parlay. The party surveys the room and Mina darts toward a spider that shimmers out of phase with room with Karia joining her against the phase spider. Meanwhile, Leeroy directly confronts Krell, the half-orc disciple of Lolth, while Kyra and Nar snipe from the kitchen. The brutal battle lasts only seconds with Mina summoning the thunderous forces of Istus as Karia plunges a sword upward into the phase spider's head, pinning it to the ceiling. Leeroy cleaves Krell even as Krell continues to strike in the name of his demon queen. The party then quickly dispatches the remaining giant spiders.   As the party recovers their breath they discover a scrap of parchment with the word "Buzzkill" inscribed on it. With a shout, Leeroy dashes back into the kitchen and, while standing at the bottom of the stairs, declares the command word. The floor shimmers for a moment, before a 5 foot metal rod surfaces up from the deck. Gleefully, Leeroy packs away the new trap and rejoins the party taking a breather from the monstrosities of this ship.   After an hour or so, the party musters themselves and moves closer to the bow, opening a door into a passageway with a rickety grate in the deck. Mina senses the unstable grate as well as the arachnid creatures awaiting in ambush and springs into battle. Quickly, two giant wolf-spiders, an ettercap, and several swarms of spiders descend upon the crowded group. The battle lasts less than a minute before the creatures are vanquished. The party searches the rooms off this passageway with most of them being deserted except for the cobwebs obscuring the view.   The exceptions are a cabin under the forward stairs that is completely devoid of cobwebs and a food storage hold at the bow of the ship which has four human sized bundles hanging within a mass of webbing that shake with movement periodically. Leeroy and Mina lead the group into the hold before cutting down the masses and attempting to free the humanoids within the webs. However, it turns out that these blobs are instead great demon mouths ready to feed. The party sighs as another battle saps away their reserves, but quickly finish off all four of the maw demons.   Ensuring the level has been clear, the party heads toward the stairs where Leeroy halts everyone before uttering "Buzzkill". Within moments, another five foot rod lays upon the surface of the deck. The party then heads up a level to the open air and alerts the jolly boat that they will camp for the night on the ship. The jolly boat nods and gets picked up by the Soul of Winter as the party recovers from their exertions of the day.
