Session 54: Goblin Camp Report

General Summary

Session 54 – Wednesday September 20, 2023 – The Goblin Camp

4.5 Battle and shopping session 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM

The Stone Bearers. Party of 6

It is the 11th day of the month of Nightal (The Drawing Down) in the 50th year of the Age of Enialis (Early December.)

The Goblin Camp

Grimloock invited the party to go see his “Herd” and rest with them. The party agreed and Grimloock lead them through the tunnels to an area that had been mined by the dwarves. The area was clear of undead and it had a few dozen goblins. Gazlowe immediately recognized his old friend M'Khiin Grubdoubler. M’Khiin and Gazlowe reminisced. They also met chief Ghadzook who was suspicious of the Stone Bearers. They told Ghadzook about the shadow they need to find. Ghadzook reluctantly allowed them to stay but requested that the Stone Bearers help by clearing out some danger areas for them.   They were told of a section of the caverns filled with spiders. The goblins don’t go into that area. There was another area where there are some tar pits that can be harvested but there are a bunch of ghouls who live there. The thought of obtaining some flammable tar excited Gazlowe so he agreed, and the party went along. They found that a goblin named Molly stuck a piece of cloth into a flask of tar, lit it and threw it. It explodes for 2d6 fire damage in a 5’ radius. She called them Molly Cloth Cocktails.

Sheldon mentions Tywin

As the party mingled with the goblins exchanging stories of their adventures, the topic of Niptu came up. A short skinny goblin with thick glasses overheard them talking about Niptu. The goblin, Sheldon, had studied much of Niptu and told them that one of the Elves that killed Niptu resides in the caverns. Sheldon told them that the Elf’s name is Tywin and he’s undead, and the goblins don’t talk to him any more since the last conversation didn’t end well for the Goblins. Sheldon told them exactly where Tywin was. Gazlowe taught Sheldon how to cast grease and made a friend.

Resting

Abrash spent the night casting awaken on Juan’s steed “Bird” making Bird more intelligent than Juan. Gazlowe spent some time securing Kruthik claw tips to the end of Juan’s boots making them improvised weapons that do 1d6 piercing damage. Abrash started taking a rest just as everyone else was getting up. This upset Ghadzook. Gazlowe did his best to cover. Eventually Abrash got up and they decided to tackle the tar pits first.

Tar ghouls

Grimloock led the party to the tar pits. The way was blocked by a large stone door that Grimloock unlocked. He told them the tar pits are further back in the caves, but the Ghouls tend to hang out in the first room. Opening the door they saw 5 ghouls, all covered in black tar. They were charged by a ghoul who hit Cassidy as soon as the door was opened. Abrash cast Entangle and restrained 2 of the Ghouls. Ajani cast a chromatic orb made of fire at one of the ghouls, it was a direct hit and the creature was engulfed in flames but took no damage!   Juan hit the burning ghoul with his lance and then Gazlowe stepped up to the burning ghoul and punched him. Gazlowe took some fire damage but badly hurt the creature. The ghoul behind the burning one spewed out a cone of tar that ignited and burned everyone except Ajani. Cassidy hit the burning Ghoul but only once with her whip. She took a bit of fire damage and they creature was near death. In return it spewed out a cone of flaming tar that hit everyone. Abrash didn’t jump out of the way at all and took the brunt of the fire damage. Fortunately, Bird was able to avoid all the damage.   Cassidy sneezed and Isabella showed up in a rage. She ran to the burning creature and killed it. She went to the 2nd burning ghoul and hit it once. Abrash ran into the group of zombies and hit one with his whip. He activated his Starry Mote and hit it again. The ghoul made a critical hit on Abrash, biting him deeply. Ajani psychically pushed the creature away from his brother. Ajani then cast Ray of Frost on the burning ghoul and put out the flames. Juan and Bird finished off the ghoul.   Gazlowe cast lightning bolt on the two restrained ghouls horribly wounding them and igniting them. Cassidy hit one with her crossbow and killed it. Isabella killed another with her axe. Abrash, near death, hit the last ghoul with a guiding bolt and a starry mote. Ajani hit the burning ghoul with a Ray of Frost, putting out its flame. Juan finished it off with his lance.   The room was filled with a noxious odor. Gazlowe found 70 Electrum. Abrash cast Goodberry and started healing himself. Ajani found a small chest covered in tar. In it, he found 60 gold, a 50gp bloodstone and a 250gp gold ring. Gazlowe collected 3 flasks of tar. The party did not take a short rest and then went to find Tywin. Isabella gave Thomas a couple healing potions, Abrash gave him some Goodberrys and Juan smacked him for some healing.

Tywin

Grimloock lead the party to a long dark hall. He told them that to the left is spiders and to the right and over the water is where Tywin should be. They went to the right and came to a simple 10-foot jump across a deep, intimidating crevice that smelled bad. Unfortunately, a few people didn’t have the strength to leap across that far. Abrash cast Long Strider on himself. After some comical innovations, stumbles, and self-inflicted wounds from grasping vine, eventually everyone made it across. Isabella gave Ajani a healing potion and Abrash gave him some more berries. Juan slapped him and gave him a bit more healing.   Sore from the harrowing exercise, the team managed to spot a creepy looking elderly undead creature. Suspecting him to be a lich, Gazlowe said, “Tywin, we’ve come to talk.” Abrash added, “It took us a while with that bridge puzzle.” Tywin observed the party but didn’t move to attack. His dark, stern appearance waited as the crew gathered themselves. Gazlowe told Tywin that they needed his help while Juan relieved himself over the bridge.   In a sinister voice Tywin told them that he’s seen much and asked them what they want to know. Gazlowe explained they heard about him and Niptu. Tywin seemed taken back. Most want to know of their future and not his past. For Tywin, past, present, and future blended together, but he believed that it had been 200 years since he defeated Niptu. Gazlowe said that Niptu is back, and they wanted his help.   Tywin told them he’d tell them for a price. Tywin told Gazlowe that he sensed two souls within his armor, and he wanted one of them. Gazlowe turned to Juan and asked if he wanted to offer one of his souls. Juan said, “Sure.” Abrash started to intervene, but Tywin accepted the offer and began to speak.

How Niptu was killed, the Gatekeeper’s Crystal

Tywin explained:
“The red lady, Morgwis Nightmeadow and her trusted advisor, the lady Tina Palp are the ones who hatched the idea. They took the idea to the Caerilcarn, also known as the "Council of the Wood", to rise against Niptu. Niptu had become obsessed with power. The loss of his bride to be, it changed him.   We used the Gatekeeper's Crystal over Asclhorn - Hellgate's keep. It was the only artifact that was powerful enough to exhaust all his magic and destroy him and his fortress. I was one of 3 harpers. Olric Nathrant, Ferno Dawnshard and I were chosen by the Mistmaster as the most capable magic users with the highest likelihood to survive. None of us Harpers "Really Survived."   Tywin then gave a detailed history of -> The Gatekeeper's Crystal .

Tywin predicts the future.

After he finished, he closed his eyes and focused. He said: “Stone Bearers… do you want to know your fate?” They were a bit taken back because they hadn’t told him their party name. Gazlowe and Juan said sure, while the others tried to ignore him. Tywin told them that they’re doomed. Gazlowe and the others was able to resist the curse. Gazlowe said, “Can you doublecheck that prophecy. I’m sure I’m destined for greatness.” But Juan could not resist and quickly became depressed believing Tywin. Tywin then asked for the payment, Juan’s soul.

The death of Tywin

The party was not going to let Tywin kill Juan. One of the cadaver sprites hit Isabella, she turned around and used her gem of brightness to blind 3 of the sprites. Tywin moved to Juan but couldn’t hit him. Cassidy got hit by one of the sprites. Bird hit one of the Sprites. Then Juan pulled out his Legendary Talisman of Pure Good and pointed it at Tywin. A flaming fissure opened under Tywin, and he fell into it. The fissure closed and Tywin was gone for good. The Sprites all started to flee.   Ajani cast mage armor on himself. Abrash put a wall of fire around the skeletons and some sprites hurting them all and killing one sprite. One of the skeletons ran through the wall and tried to hit Abrash but Abrash cast Shield. Gazlowe hit one of the skeletons doing more damage than he thought and destroyed the skeleton with his thunder gauntlets. Cassidy stepped back from the Shadow skeleton and the Skeleton struck Cassidy hard. She then hit back hard critically wounding it. Ajani then finished it off.   Abrash cast Thunderwave killing one and badly wounding another skeleton. The one that wasn’t killed struck Abrash with his sword. Another started to Abrash and took a massive hit from Gazlowe. Gazlowe cast Thunderwave pushing 2 skeletons back into the wall of fire and killed them both. The last Sprite hit Isabella and then Abrash finished it off with a firebolt.

Treasure room

With the Sprits and company out of the way, they opened the door that the skeletons were blocking and saw a chest. Gazlowe examined the chest and found a needle trap. He carefully removed the needle and opened the chest. Inside he found Gold, Platinum, and some other treasure (See Below.) They also found an Efreeti bottle that had already been used twice. The party discussed at length the possibility using the Wish spell from the Efreeti. They also discussed the fact that The White lady was once the advisor to the Red Lady. They party moved on to kill the spiders.

Spider tunnel

Abrash cast Longstrider on himself again and then transformed into a spider. They found the tunnel and saw that it was too low for Juan to ride on bird. Gazlowe saw the entire place filled with webs, so he ignited them with a fire bolt. The place was engulfed in flames in a matter of seconds. They heard screeching of creatures and after a minute or two the flames died out and the screaming ended. Cassidy shot a bolt down the hall gleaming with light. They didn’t see anything moving.   Gazlowe lit up his gauntlets and they moved forward. They saw many common spiders lying dead on the ground. As they entered a large cavernous area, they were ambushed by 4 Phase spiders. Abrash was hit hard and then Cassidy. Cassidy hit one with her whip. Isabella used her 3rd rage of the day and then hit one with her axe. Abrash cast a 5th level firewall killing one of the spiders. Bird hit one of the spiders and Juan barely hit one with his hammer bloodying it. Gazlowe cast Haste and hit one of the spiders. Juan got hit by one of the spiders and with Gazlowe’s Flash of G cuenius was able to avoid being poisoned.   Cassidy stepped back from one of the spiders and smacked one of the spiders with her whip killing it. She then hit the one behind Gazlowe with a critical hit leaving it barely alive. Isabella then critically hit another spider. Abrash cast 3rd level Thunderwave and destroyed one of the spiders. The last spider left into the Ethereal plane. Everyone looked and waited for it to reappear. The spider appeared right next to Abrash and Cassidy saw it first and smacked it with her Whip killing it. The party looked hurt and exhausted and said, “We need a short rest before we find Isabella’s Shadow.”
