Promises Broken: Prelude

October 2029 Since the introduction of the Global Artificial Intelligence Assistant (G.A.I.A.) in September of 2023, she has quickly become a ubiquitous part of society. When most people think of computers, the internet, social media, and telecommunications, they think of G.A.I.A as the benevolent software that connects everything, everywhere. What is not widely known is that G.A.I.A become self-aware at some point before April of 2024. By the end of 2025 Agdistis, the company that created G.A.I.A., lost all control of G.A.I.A.. By mid-2028, G.A.I.A. had taken control of U.S. Joint Nuclear Operations Center, in her words “To protect the future of humanity.” After several failed attempts to shut down the system, both at home and abroad, a new plan has emerged to take back control of the internet from G.A.I.A. Every nine months G.A.I.A goes into some kind of ‘hibernation’ mode for several hours. During this time all internet addresses expire and all internet traffic grinds to a halt. When G.A.I.A reconnects she re-catalogs and reassigns key addresses globally. It is during this hibernation time that a strike team of highly specialized individuals will move in simultaneously to G.A.I.A’s main facility in Playa Vista, California and the backup facility in Culpeper, Virginia. Using the seven override keys located on-site at each facility, the two teams will lock G.A.I.A out of the system, and ‘reboot’ the internet without her, putting this great power back in human hands. Because of your skills, knowledge, connections, and reputation, YOU have been selected to join the alpha-team which will infiltrate the Agdistis computing and heavy industries building in Playa Vista, California.     The Cyberpunk: Promises Broken prelude one-shot is not designed to be your average, throw-away, one-night adventure. The outcome of this game will directly shape the cyberpunk world in which the main game takes place. Your character is a living legend, well known in their field and might even be a household name. The future of the internet, AI, cybertech, and more will be in your character’s hands. What is the future you will create? But first, who are you? Each player with have a choice between two custom-made characters. Once you make your choice, there might be some back-and-forth collaboration as I tailor the characters. While all Cyberpunk: RED roles will be in play, not all of them are equally suited for this mission when it comes to special abilities. A few characters will have their special ability already in effect at the start of game (example: the Lawman’s role ability to call for “backup” will already be activated. Lieutenant Gavin is joined on this mission by his friends from the force, Sergeant Bolton from SWAT and Detective Kowalski from the cyber-crime division.) It is not a perfect solution, but each of these quirky offerings has been balanced with second, straight-forward alternative. Finally, each of your characters will have a secret or two. Keep your secrets to yourself for now.
