Defiance in Phlan - Quest 2 Report Part 1 - Into the Goblin Cave

General Summary

After a peaceful nights rest back at the Tea Kettle, Briez, one of Madame Freona’s five daughters, is serving the party a delightful breakfast, which includes freshly made wildberry jam on warm biscuits. “My sisters and I picked the berries ourselves,” says the young halfling woman, sweeping her long black hair out of her face. “Some say the wildberries in this area are—” Before Briez can finish her thought, shrieking erupts from the street outside the Tea Kettle. While the words are mostly unintelligible, they can make out the words “help” and “family.”   When the characters went into the street to investigate, townsfolk were rushing to assist a middle-aged human woman. She had collapsed in the middle of the road, crying hysterically, clutching an infant boy in her arms.   It seemed that the woman, Millivent Moss, owned a Peat Farm some miles from Phlan with her husband Haldred. Earlier that morning the farm had been attacked by a band of goblins. Millivent had managed to escape with their youngest child, Bo, but Haldred, their older children and several farm hands had been captured by the goblins.   The party agreed to help and local town guards who showed little interest in the issue offered the players a promissory note offering 50 gold pieces from the city's coffers for 'services rendered'.   Millivent offered to take the party to the goblin camp on her wagon and so the party set off. Stopping some way from the camp and leaving Millivent to return to Phlan, the party crept up close to survey the area. They found a cave mouth and spotted a goblin talking with a tall, cloaked human-sized figure. The adventurers heard the tail-end of the conversation:   Goblin: “Only one raiding group return. They bring prisoners. Other raiding groups return soon. No more snake coin people found.”   The human nodded and replied:   “Excellent. Tell Gorrunk that my friends and I will pay lots of coin and give lots of gifts for all of the dragon artifacts you can find. And kill any other humans who you find near your home.”   The human then vanished through arcane means and the goblin headed back into the cave.   A rather disastrous attempt to enter the cave stealthily meant that the party were spotted as they hurried in, and unfortunately Elvis was caught by a lucky shot from a goblin hiding behind a wall! The party managed to get to cover and Torbella aimed a well-placed sleep spell through a hole in the wall, knocking the bow-wielding goblins unconscious. The party gathered themselves and prepared to delve deeper into the cave system in search of the missing Moss family members....
