Session 58: The Rat departs and we find an aberration
General Summary
With a good long rest and my sword-curse dealt with, we go back into the vault, moving on to find the Lich. However, once we are back there and want to move on to the next unexplored room, the Rat starts to behave weird and has some sort of episode. Once he recovers, he declares his past has caught up with him and he needs to leave to deal with it. He walks towards the nearest black gate, says his goodbyes in a way that makes clear he doesn't expect to ever return, refuses any and all offers for help and leaves. And with that, the Rat is gone. It is unlikely we will ever see him again and we decide to move on. Going through the white gate into the next area, we find a hallway where the floor is covered in a layer of slime. It is kind of hard to walk through it and the rest of the group is struggling, but if you lift your feet just right you can walk through it at a normal pace. The Tiefling just refuses to walk through the slime and conjures up an earth elemental to carry her. When moving on, we find the body of a Thayan covered by the slime, the stuff is poisonous and must have killed him. When leaving the hallway, we enter a room where the walls and roof are covered with eyes, while the floor is still covered with slime. At the roof, I see an eye that is different from the rest and knowing how dangerous this dungeon is, I attack it straight away. A creature with several eyes on stalks appears, shooting rays from those eyes. The rays cause all kinds of trouble with the others, but I manage to avoid the effects. The creature is high up against the ceiling and I am the only one hitting it, which is going slow as I cannot hit it hard enough. This would have been a perfect target for the Rat! Finally the Dwarf manages to banish it for a little while and we get through the room, up some stairs and out of the slime, but some zombies come out of the next room, up the stairs. However, those go down easily. We go in there and discuss what to do with the creature, as the banishment will soon end. The Tiefling insist on trying to talk to the creature and in the end, the Dwarf humors her, ends the banishment of the creature and makes the Tiefling and the creature understand each other. As she insists, I don't attack it again. And she manages to calm it down, apparently it is more mad at the Thayans than at us. It decides it wants to fight them together with us. However, it first needs to get rid of the magic that binds it to the room, which the Dwarf manages. With that, our group gained a new member, for now at least. While the Tiefling insist he is a friend, I don't trust this aberration, but it is at least a formidable fighter. It is a beholder and it seems it had even more of those ray shooting eyes before, as it has scars where stalks seem to be cut off, but still it is formidable and it is mad at the Thayans, who did this apparently, so he will be useful even though he makes me feel uncomfortable.
