Session 35: Why listen to the professional nomad?
General Summary
Once we get back to town, we have a good night’s rest. I have another dream. In this one, I can see a large sphere in a dark space. And I see some ships floating in the darkness. Wonder if I’m seeing a ‘planet’. Janey seems really excited when I share it with her. Guess our decision to go to Lundyn to study this stuff some more has been the correct one. In the morning, we go make our report to the Guild so we get paid. I let the others handle the paperwork. After we get our money, Skrik and Janey decide to give our hirelings some extra money. And they were talking about an encouraging letter to try joining the Guild again. The rest also wants to have a chat with Dhastean, for some reason. Not sure why, but they’re Guild members too, so they can. Don’t think anything of value was said, but they seemed happy enough getting to chat with him. I’m thinking back to when I traveled here the first time. Now that I have a lot of money, and I can actually go into towns because of my Guild status… I’m thinking about getting a fancy carriage with some horses to travel in style. Instead of having to slither everywhere. If we’re going to this big Britannian town, might as well do it in style, right? So, I buy a REALLY fancy cart and 2 horses. Janey insists on naming the horses. She picks “Buttercup” for 1 of them, and “Bucephalus” for the other. Or “Bucky” for short. They also talk me into getting a proper driver. I can see how not having to worry about that so I can just focus on relaxing and stuff in the back would be nice. So, we also hire Spencer Elliot. I think Janey has a crush on him or something, because she seemingly loses the ability to speak normally whenever he’s around and she can see him. I might need to give her some tips on how to deal with that. It’s not long before we get underway. We all talk a bit about our goals for being Adventurers. Duldar wants to travel and learn things, as well as make money for his smithing. Janey says she wants to figure out how to make magic items again. Skrik talks about building a ratfolk nation. Voron didn’t really have any goals. Me? I just wanna figure out this symbol and these dreams I’ve got. Spencer does us proud and tells us there’s potential trouble nearby. But since it’s just bats and they’re not in the way, we just ignore them and keep on traveling. Spencer is asked about his love life, and he says that he’s happily married. This makes Janey both relieved and sad at the same time. I use the kitchen in this really fancy carriage to make everybody a nice lunch, and there’s some ideas about making my carriage the first step into a moving town. I knew they’d see sense and embrace the nomadic lifestyle sooner or later. There might be hope for them yet! We’ll see how well they adapt to eating like proper Naga in time. After lunch, we come across a large snail with a pretty shell. It seems harmless enough for now, but that doesn’t last long. It’s quite tough to hit, the shell is proving to be a nuisance beyond expectation. And it’s Janey’s magic that ends its life, while the rest of us just struggle to do much damage. The shell even reflects a bunch of magic back at the caster! How’s that fair, huh? After it’s dead, Skrik gets the meat out of the shell. We talk a bit about maybe adding some of that shell to our shields to reflect magic back at our enemies. Or just selling it for a lot of money because it looks really pretty. We travel on for a bit longer before we need to set up camp for the night. Bad news: The snail didn’t really taste like anything. I just tossed in a bunch of herbs to make it taste good, but it didn’t really work. Janey plays around with a bit of shell to check how effective the reflecting is after the thing died. Not super effective, but it might be enough. Worse news: They get ahead of themselves and mess around with the boomsticks. I tell them they should be patient and wait until we get to Lundyn before they start researching. But they don’t wanna listen, and make a lot of loud noises. We set up some watches to get through the night. Skrik takes first watch, Duldar will take second watch, Voron will take third watch, and I’ll take last watch. Pretty simple, right? What could possibly go wrong? Worst news: Those loud noises alerted some things to our presence. And they’re not things you wanna get the attention of if you can help it. During Skrik’s watch, there’s a big white ape that comes close. Voron tries talking to it, but it doesn’t seem interested in that. Janey turns me into an even bigger ape, and while the legs take some getting used to, I manage to punch it in the face real good. It just goes into a frenzy and attacks Voron and Duldar! I keep beating its face in, before Duldar kills it with his magic. Skrik skins it. Janey says these things are supposed to be smart, and that they hate mages. And that they have an infectious disease that is really bad for mages, too. Just to be on the safe side, I do some of my anti-disease stuff on Skrik after he’s done skinning it. The fur looks really good, at least? I also make a note to purify the meat tomorrow, before I collect it for provisions. Even worst news: Apparently, that commotion with the boomsticks also lured a green dragon to us. Duldar didn’t notice it, and it took out Buttercup before anybody noticed anything. What is it with our group and dragons? Oh, and it kills Bucky too, as the horse understandably freaks the heck out and tries to get away from this dragon. Just great. There went our horses. I hope Janey can figure out a way to make the carriage move without horses once she figures out making magical items. Because I’m not gonna buy new horses every time we get to a new town because we lost the old ones. I may have silver scales, but I’m not made of money! Long story short: I’m really pissed at this dragon, as is the rest. It runs away like a li’l bitch after we start hurting it real bad. But Janey hits it with a Fireball and does a bunch of damage. And Skrik isn’t having any of its “Hiding in the forest” horsecrap and tells Voron EXACTLY where it is, so he can fry it with his lightning. We pack up our camp and relocate it to where the dragon died. I decide “Eff this” and go back to sleep. They wanna be super tired tomorrow because they stay up all night cutting up this dragon, that’s their problem. I’m gonna make sure at least someone’s got a decent night’s sleep on our way into Lundyn. Of course, that’s assuming that playing around with the boomsticks doesn’t give us even MORE things we’ve got to fight off. I TOLD them not to mess around with those things until we got to Lundyn. But noooooooo. Why should they listen to the Naga that’s only spent his entire life being a nomad, right? Surely he doesn’t know what he’s talking about! I swear to the Platinum Dragon, these people are going to get me killed someday...
