Session 19: The Purple Worm Poison Chug Challenge
General Summary
The party's darkling captive agreed to escort the party to the other side of the broken bridge span and lead them out to safety in exchange for his life. He began leading them down a dwarven made hallway that was intersected by the tunnel of a purple worm which still lay dead in the tunnel's end. They found a group of duergar tending to the deceased worm, including a priest who seemed to be carefully extracting poison from the creature. Using pass without trace, Illevaere helped to hide and stealth the party as they attempted to move past the duergar and move down the descending tunnel left in the purple worm's wake. However, with the lights extinguished, Levi stepped in a puddle, making enough noise to attract the attention of one of the duergar. The party began an ambush on the duergar who were outnumbered by the party. Bolvaic issued a challenging threat which stayed the hand of the duergar and their champion, Karkum, ordered his men to cease their attack. The party negotiated with the duergar, who were suspicious of them. Illevaere, however, recognized that one of the duergar worshipped Caena, the same goddess that they venerated. Illevaere recognized that they were extracting the venom of the purple worm, which is very potent and deadly. Bolvaic, meanwhile, was speaking with the duergar priest, who mentioned ingesting the worm poison as a ritual that their order goes through, where Caena only let the chosen survive. Bolvaic offered to drink the poison in exchange for a vial of it for himself should he survive. Expecting him to die, the duergar priest accepted and before Illevaere could warn him of how deadly it was, Bolvaic downed the flask. The poison took its effects on Bolvaic, who was nearly dropped by it. However, he was able to overcome the potential fatality of the poison, earning the respect of the duergar who began to trust the party a bit more. The duergar priest then gave Bolvaic the promised vial of purple worm poison and Bolvaic gave it to Illevaer since he believe that they had wanted it. The party asked for them duergar to lead them to the other side of the bridge span and out of the dwarven depths. They agreed, provided that the party defeat the Necromancer, Mysafiestal, who had long hampered the duergar. The party agreed, though the Darkling prisoner confided in Ilbryen that he was leading them to Mysafiestal in order for him to show them the way out and they should not kill him. Wren began feeling agitated and warned Levi that it would not be long before the moon rose on the surface and he feared that he would transform into a werewolf. He suggested that he leave the party behind since it would be too dangerous, but the party decided to take him with them. They asked Karkum, the duergar champion, if there was a place for them to rest for the night. Karkum agreed to show them a safe place to make camp. He would accompany the party while the others returned to their camp with the collected poison.
