Baldur's Gate: A Tale of Two Cities

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…   Along the mouth of the Chionthar River sits Baldur’s Gate, a decadent metropolis of opportunists and corruption. Further down the river, to the northeast, sits the Holy City of Elturgard, a bastion of piety and righteousness, protected by orders of knights most holy.   For the past five years the two city-states have warred over the wealth that flows through the Chionthar River. Long has the River Chionthar flowed red with the blood of the fallen. Peace talks spurred onwards by Waterdeep and Neverwinter has forged a temporary ceasefire as the Grand Dukes of Baldur’s Gate and Archbishop of Elturel agreed to discuss an end to this war.   Yet what came after nobody expected…   The very hells themselves rose up from the earth itself and swallowed Elturel whole. From the hellish crater where the city once stood flooded hordes of demons and devils who fought a war against their own. The surrounding land once again became a battlefield, but not between the nations of mortalkind, but between the devils of Avernus and the Demons of the abyss.   Those scarce few from Elturgard that survived now fled towards Baldur’s Gate, a city whom they once considered their enemy.   Now you, who once called Elturgard home, have joined the vast throng of refugees…   Perhaps you will rise to the occasion and save your damned homeland, or perhaps you will carve for yourself a new life in Baldur’s Gate. Regardless, a land of hellish adventure awaits you.
