C2 Session 6: The Sanctum of the Erudite Eye Report
General Summary
17th of Haelynir 1545 Continued
By 4pm, the team has identifed all the items and Brin has given his guess on pricing. Afterwards they unlock the Northern door they haven't gone through yet. Ubek and Ana work together to open the door. Beyond the door is a short hallway that leads to another door. Brin notices that it's trapped and that the bloody footprints seem to have come from this way. Once again Ubek and Ana's teamwork disable the trap. Moving onto the next room the door opens to an octagonal chamber that is empty save for a large metal chest against the eastern wall. A series of hieroglyphs are inscribed on the wall above it. Stone doors are set in both the northern and southern walls. Khelru translates the hieroglyphs as "The righteous and the holy have no need of staff, rod, or ring. Place your faith in the Good Magister and walk without fear." The chest is empty, much to the group's disappointment. They check over the next door and open it to find stars going down. The group resolves to leave for the day and head back out to safety, continuing tomorrow. They grab what they have found and will bring the cart tomorrow to collect all the library. As they leave, a group of five is approaching the group. The leader of this group is a woman who speaks with the group. Her name is Bal Themm. She has been sent by Mistress Everhand. Mistress Everhand has been struggling to get her audience with the High Priestess Sebti and has resorted to sending her own forces to settle any dispute between the two parties here due to a party being in the wrong place. Those in the wrong will be taken to the Khirdai temple for the their crimes. After a short discussion they agree to take this directly to Mistress Everhand as the members of the Scorched Hand with them were not at fault for what happened here. They might be able to help with finding Velriana and figuring out her motives. They all head there. At 5:30pm they arrive at the gate and get cleared through there after presenting what they had found. Then continuing to the Hall of Blessed Rebirth before arriving at 6:30pm. There they are taken to Mistress Everhand's office. There they discuss with the Scorched Hand what happened and what they know about Velriana. The following is said:- Khelru met Velriana on his pilgrimage.
- Azaz and Velriana studdied at the same school in Aryia.
- Idorii is just a sword for hire to balance the group and act as Velriana's personal guard.
- Velriana is a follower of Ruonil and was drawn here due to writings about an old temple of Vorynn and the necropolis reopening for the lottery.
- Velriana is from Anuire.
- There is currently an investigation in the temple of Khirdai to see who Velriana bribed.
- The Scorched Hand should hang around in town for a while until this is sorted.
- Jamal was knocked unconscious by whatever happened today. He felt something go through him and everything went black. He felt unwell upon waking and it took most of the day for the fuzzy and dizzy feelings faded.
- Margaret confront Jamal with the evidence and observation about his nature. Mistress Everhand was already aware of Jamal's true nature thanks to a secret communication from Priestess Mama and communing with Anubis. Priestess Mama was who recommended Mistress Everhand to Jamal as an ally in the city.
- Jamal woke up 4 months ago, clawing his way out of a shallow mass grave with only the vague memories of why he was there. The moon was full and Nyla (Jamal's familiar) was there waiting for him. He, and my entire village, had been brutally murdered. Jamal does not remember the life he was robbed of. He wondered the desert and eventually found a priestess who offered compassion, guidance and help instead of violence.
- Jamal has an item that stops his true nature from being detected.
18th of Haelynir 1545
The group comes down for breakfast. Khelru and Azaz wish to join the party as volunteers to continue looking into the Vorynn temple. Brin invites Idorii to join them, but didn't check with the others first about payment and in the end she doesn't join them. The check in with the gate and head into the necropolis. At 6:45pm they arrive at the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye. They do a lap of the top floor to ensure that nothing new had arrived overnight. Then they head down the stairs. At the bottom of the stairs are black and white doors that open up to a room. A stone bench sits against the eastern wall of this octagonal chamber. Black tiles line the floor, walls, and ceiling. A short passage to the south ends at a gate of bronze bars. Look through the bars the group can see a statue. Brin is nervous about the symbolism down here but Margaret reassures him as Ana slags off on Ruornil as a god. Khelru stands up for his go and the group moves on after they unlock the gate. Looking into the room there is a black and white door to the East and West. There is a statue directly opposite Ana. Otherwise the room is empty. As Ana enters the room, the statue moves and attacks Ana. The group quickly bands together to attack the statue until it crumbles to dust leaving only the quarterstaff behind. Meanwhile the gate they came through has swung shut during the fight. The group heads to the West door after a little bit of healing magic is used. Brin looks it over to notice it is locked but not trapped. Ana unlocks the door and she heads inside. Two columns carved to resemble men with their arms crossed over their chests, holding a khopesh in one hand and an ankh in the other, support the ceiling of this long chamber. Deep alcoves in the walls form burial chambers, some of which are sealed with stone doors. Other sepulchers just have sarcophagi tucked inside, while a few appear empty. To the north and south, wide passages exit the room through the east wall, each leading to stone double doors. As Ana walks into the larger area, so does someone else out of one of the alcoves. This dead body risen once more looks over to Ana before raising it's sword to attack. The group works together to protect Ana and put the dead down. Afterwards, Khelru explains that this area was a place where likely high priests of Vorynn were buried. Looking around the room Brin notices that the stone with the man figures carved into it weren't designed to be removed, but if time was spent they could be. He also noticed that there was a secret door. Ana backs everyone up and telekinetically open the door. Inside is a small chest. They look it over. It's not locked or trapped. Inside is 3 potions, a needle, 330 gp and a pouch containing 6 gems. Afterwards they head down to look over the South door. The door is locked but not trapped. However neither Ana or Ubek can open it. They backtrack to the room with the rubble that was once a statue and take the East door there. Ubek is able to unlock this door. This space as an East and South corridor. Brin notices that the bloody foot prints come out of the wall along the East corridor. Upon closer inspection they find a hidden door. Opening it they see a stone effigy of a humanoid figure stands at the north end of this room, its arms spread in a gesture of supplication, or as if commanding an object to rise in the air. The figure's face is devoid of detail, with only vague contours where the eyes and nose should be. An extensive series of hieroglyphs covers the western wall, opposite a stone bench that stands against the eastern wall. They ask Khelru to reach the hieroglyphs. He explains they are complicated and he'll need a moment. Brin follows the footprints to the statue. He inspects it closer. There is no dust on the head of the statue but there is dust elsewhere. However Brin is more alarmed by the snake skeleton before that is reared up behind the statue. The creature's gaze stuns many of the team, however everyone else is quick to be able to take it down. Afterwards Brin explains what he noticed about the statue before the snake creature attacked. The group decides to take a break here and enjoy a rest. At 8:30am the group has finished their rest. Khelru has finished his translation. "Woe to you who would plunder the Reliquary of the Thrice-Divided Soul. Turn away, lest the harsh judgment of the Forgotten One fall upon you and your descendants for a thousand generations. Turn away, for his ka cannot be appeased and it shall call forth legions of the dead and the damned. Turn away, and may the All-Seeing Eye and the Lady of Graves take pity on you, for if not, the Forgotten Pharaoh shall consume you, body and soul." After briefly discussing it, they decide to get moving. They continue down the East corridor to find a door before the corridor turns South to a gate. Brin opens the door after finding it is not locked or trapped. Inside a large silver summoning circle is inlaid in the floor tiles near the center of this octagonal chamber. In the northeast corner of the room, a set of narrow steps leads up to a raised dais. A concave stone bench, almost a throne, perches atop the dais, flanked by two bronze braziers. Four columns carved in the form of fantastic creatures support the room's vaulted ceiling. The column to the northeast depicts a beautiful, hawk-winged, succubus-like woman, while the southeast column is fashioned in the form of a feminine figure of billowing smoke or clouds crackling with electricity. The northwest column portrays a half- skeletal spellcaster of some kind, and the column to the southwest resembles a winged, angelic creature wearing a metallic mask. Margaret enters the room to look over the circle. As she does so, two of the columns animate and start to move. The cloud one and the hawk winged woman. Working together, they reduce both statues to rubble. Unfortunately Khelru can't identify the importance of the statues and Margaret can't understand the circle. They head South to the gate. Brin checks the gate to find it is locked but not trapped. Ana unlocks it and the gate springs open. Two rows of columns support the vaulted ceiling of this large chamber. Inscribed hieroglyphs cover most of the room's walls, but the southern wall is rough and unfinished. Three passages, each closed with a bronze gate, exit the room to the north, east, and west. Khelru looks over the hieroglyphs and explains they are Vorynn prayers. While they look around the gate swings shut and Brin starts to freak out a little. They look at the West gate and unlock it, heading that way. Ubek unlocks it and the group pitons it in place. There is a gate to the North that seems to go to the centre of the space the corridors had been leading them around. There is a door to the West before the hallway takes them North to where they first entered the corridor space. After Ana and Ubek fail to unlock the Western door, Ana gets annoyed and bangs on the door, demanding it should be opened. After a few seconds the group does indeed hear a lock click. Inside is an aggressive looking, talking skeleton who seems upset there are more intruders after centuries of peace. It seems the skeleton, a follower of Vorynn, is rather dramatic when spoken to and becomes very offended at the mention of his temple being abandoned. The group convinces the skeleton that they are investigating the theft. They discuss what they know with the divinations and the stolen item. They agree to disagree about the state of the city in terms of abandonment as the skeleton gives them permission to search the temple for clues. They quickly look around the room the skeleton is in. A simple chapel area. Ana finds the lacquered cabinet on the west wall holds simple religious tools, including a gold chalice. Everyone else finds a large library of books that the skeleton has obviously collected over time. The group agrees to finish searching the temple. Afterwards Azaz and Khelru will take the cart of paperwork back to the gate while the group looks into the false assignment location they were given. They learn the skeleton's name is Senenmerek. He seems very curious with a love of reading. He was there when the plague hit Wati, but doesn't know where it came from. He believes it might have been to do with the feuding gods and an attempt to weaken Masela by killing her followers. Afterwards the group heads back to unlock the gate heading into the centre of the corridor space. Ubek unlocks it and they enter. A large, star-shaped fountain with a circular basin in the center occupies most of this octagonal chamber, surrounded by a ring of stones engraved with hieroglyphs. Roaring blue flames rise from the basin to almost touch the ceiling. The area is separated from the rest of the complex by a metal gate just to the south. Ana drinks the water and Khelru finds a secret door. It's not locked or trapped. The small room beyond the door contains a carved sandstone figure of a humanoid engraved with hieroglyphs. The previous day the group had learned about a keystone like this that controls the Ahkhat. Margaret identifies the keystone. She learns while in contact you can give the Ahkhat commands about defence and maintenance. You cannot command it to hurt itself or the building it is bound to. It is set to retreat when injured to a certain level. This cannot be changed. Must use keystone to change commands. Margaret touches it and commands it to follow her, open doors and point out secret doors or compartments. The wall nearby moves and then a figure made of the building stands directly behind Margaret. They go back to the room with the columns and head down the East corridor as the Ahkhat opens the next gate for them. The corridor turns left and goes to a white and black door. Margaret opens the door. Hieroglyphs cover the walls of this chamber. In the middle of the room, a large and majestic stone sarcophagus rests atop a raised stone platform, and several clay jars sit on the floor nearby. Two lacquered benches stand near the doors to the south. Khelru reads the heiroglyphs to tell the group that the original founder and first high priest of the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye was laid to rest in this tomb, their name is Djedihepet. Looking over the sarcophagus, Margaret finds a secret compartment. Upon opening it a lightning ward is set off. Azaz isn't fairing well after that but the party is mostly okay. Khelru is very attenuative to him and quick to heal him. Inside the compartment is a pearl and ring. They take the time to stop and rest. Azaz and Khelru discuss wanting to come back here at some stage to continue their mission and intention for this building. At 11:30am the group finishes resting and opens the sarcophagus. It reveal a mummified body and mummified rat. The body is wearing a Black and White mask, and a holy symbol. They take the mask but leave the holy symbol. They head out with the aide of the Ahkhat, who follows them to the entrance and stops there watching them go. Khelru and Azaz stay behind to pack up the library. The group navigates their way around the necropolis until they are South of their desired location. Ana and Ubek notice that this looks very market like. Though Ubek has a harder time recognising it as such. To him it seems different to the other streets. Ana also hears something moving in a building nearby. Margaret uses the message spell to communicate with it. It does speak Khinasi but Margaret does not believe they know who they are. They send Luna to investigate. Luna goes over to the nearby window and sees a bunch of ghouls with red cloth tied to their upper arms searching the room intently. They decide to be move through quietly. Brin focuses his ki to muffle their movements. The group is creeping up the market street and your destination is ahead. There are ghouls with red cloth tied to their arms ahead. The ghouls are at the door the party wishes to use. Brin uses an item of his to make a smoke screen. As the smoke reaches the ghouls, the turn and look around in various directions. They had one hand cupped under the other. One pointed two fingers, one had a fist, and two had a flat hand on top of the cupped hand. The group tries to draw the ghoul away from the door to avoid a fight. However Brin gets too close to one, and it howls, alerting the others. The fight is messy. Brin, Ubek and Jamal do okay with the fight, however the smoke puts Ana and Margaret at a disadvantage throughout the ordeal. With the last ghoul falling, the group thinks the danger is clear for now, but there are sounds being hear from various buildings around the place that indicate that there might be more around. The group quickly searches the bodies. They find 33 cp, 13 gp, a fancy hair brush, a baby rattle, spatula, and a dish rag. Margaret gathers the coins and fancy hair brush, then approaches the door. Ubek opens the door, though he says it's stuck. Brin, with Ubek's help push the door open. It seems there was furniture in front of the door. The air in this shop smells of food heavily seasoned with coriander seed, garlic, and other spices, mingled with the earthy aroma of decay. Bright stains mar the gray wooden shelves on the walls. In the rear of the shop, a beaded curtain hangs over an opening that leads deeper into the building. Inside there are three people looking defensive as they hold their shortswords at the ready. It's the Sunrise Fellows. They demand the door get shut. Margaret quickly assess the Sunrise Fellows. Margaret can tell they're on edge. They don't look well. They've clearly been here a while and it shows. Definitely a bit of Cabin Fever going on and in need of a good meal. She immediately starts to hand out rations. Brin makes sure everyone is in before rebarricadong the door. The Sunrise Fellows explain that they came to do a job and the ghouls have stopped them from leaving. The group has seen as many as 20 in one time. They're caught off-guard by the rations being just given to them. When asked about the red sashes, the Sunrise Fellows tell them about the rumours of the ghouls being in gangs. Red vs Blue. The party wants to look around which has the Sunrise Fellows back on edge. Ana near the door can hear scratching at the door. Margaret heads around the back to explore. The Sunrise Fellows don't stop her. She sets off a trap, alchemist fire hitting her as glass shatters and a growl from the backroom is heard. Ana is quick to put Margaret out with her magic. Worm, one of the Sunrise Fellows, suggests the group leaves as they point out that Bheg, their other member out back, probably doesn't want anyone out there. Margaret looses her shit asking, what the fuck is going on. Oshwyt, another Sunrise Fellow, tells the group they can't talk about Bheg is doing, but they had no idea there was a trap. Brin checks in with Margaret and asks about this Bheg and the growls. A ghastly grey man comes running out of the room. He looks very unwell. He takes a bite out of Margaret, which she shields herself from some of the clawing from the man. After the man takes a bite out of Margaret, he calms slightly and licks his lips, taking stock of the room. He berates the other for letting people in here. Jamal subtly tells the group that Bheg is undead as he runs to defend Margaret. Ubek holds an attack for if Bheg continues to attack Margaret. Date Palm, the final Sunrise Fellow member, is very freaked out by the whole situation. Ana, the smallest person in the room, starts yelling and demanding an explanation before she gets angry. Worm is confused and conflicted. Margaret backs up, readying a beam of moonlight for if the man becomes hostile again as she questions his condition. Oshwyt explains that Bheg was under the weather recently. Bheg is annoyed and reminds the group they can't have witnesses as he orders his group to kill everyone. He sends off a Scorching ray at Jamal, Maragret and Brin. This knocks Margaret unconscious and burns Brin. Jamal and Ubek attack in kind and only Ubek's arrow finds it's target. Jamal heals Margaret and attacks Bheg, questioning the man about his deteriorating mental faculties or if this is a true unlife. Ubek fires another arrow, critically hitting Bheg. Date Palm tries to convince Bheg that they should just go since they have been stuck here for too long. Ana tells the other Sunrise Fellows to go, so they can live as she hexes Bheg and hitting him with an Eldritch Blast. Worm wants to live and tries to convince Bheg to stop so he can see a Cleric since he's obviously sick. Margaret calls down the moon as she comes back round to confuse Bheg before slowly getting up. Oshwyt is silent and just watches this all unfold. Brin moves up and attacks Bheg. Bheg shoots out another scorching ray at Jamal and Brin but misses. The man growls as fire wildly comes out of his hands and he starts to look as feral as when he first came out. As Jamal dodges the fire, he puts his sword through the man. The fire in the room dies down as Bheg falls to Jamal's blade. Brin apologies to the Sunrise Fellows about their friend and offers to help get the body back to town. The Sunrise Fellows are taken back by this offer. Brin tries to get information out of them with a bit of intimidation, but they clamp down when asked about the operation here. Brin is annoyed but Ana understands. Margaret looks around the building as Ana heals her a little. As the group talks and the Sunrise Fellows get a little more defensive, the party realises Bheg bit Margaret. She heals herself of illness just in case. Margaret finds a wrapped up package with some substances in it in a hidden place. The group takes a rest, which finishes at 1:30pm. The group attempts to leave building. Brin runs out of the building first into many ghouls with red armbands in the street picking at their fallen. One of the ghouls turn on Brin and almost critically hurt him, but Margaret reaches out and a veil of moonlight embraces Brin to redirect the blow against him. From behind Jamal sends out a Chill Touch spell at the ghoul. Margaret calls down moonlight on two of the ghouls, but only one seems to be affected. Brin attacks the creatures, asking the group if they intend to fight through this. The ghouls groan, telling the group they cannot run. These ghouls seem tactical as they are actively dodging if they can't be up the front and fighting. Ana mutters to herself about remembering tactics for when the enemy is bunched up as she fumbles in her pouch and claps something between her hands. The air around many of them cracks with a thunderous sound as if the air itself has shattered. This injuries many and kills one. Ubek fires an arrow at one, trying to pick it off. The ghouls see what happens when they bunch and start to scatter but stay nearby. Pulling out a sling, with a keen eye and ease, Oshwyt hits the ghoul between the eyes which knocks it down. Date Palm and Worm do the same, damaging another ghoul with their teamwork. Another two Ghouls runs up to attack Brin but misses. Jamal and Margaret continues to use his magic to try and take more out. Brin takes down the ghoul in front of him, but another moves up to take it's place, not that it can hit Brin when it tries to attack. Ana quickly finishes that ghoul off. Ubek can't get a clear shot as another ghoul runs in to attack Brin but misses. The Sunrise Fellows continue to sling rocks, but only Oshwyt and Worm hit. Jamal and Margaret's magic continue to wear the ghoul down in front of Brin. Brin hurts one but as he tries to be clever around the corner of the door can't seem to hit the other ghoul. Ana kills off another Ghoul as Ubek misses again. The Sunrise Fellows have to hold their slings for the moment to wait for a Ghoul to rush in. They don't have to wait long and all three hit and kill it before it even makes it to Brin. Another ghoul runs up to attack Brin and misses. Jamal misses as he tries to fire more magic at another ghoul. Margaret has better luck finishing off the last visible ghoul. Brin scoops up Bheg and runs out the door. A ghoul runs after Brin, attacking him and his toxin paralysing Brin. Ana runs after Brin and seeing him frozen, uses the wand of lesser restoration on him as she runs to his side. Ubek runs out to defend Brin but misses. The Sunrise Fellows continue to sling stones, Oshwyt and Worm, finding their mark. Jamal heals Brin a little as he follows. Margaret tries to hit another ghoul coming up behind Jamal but misses. Brin takes a swing at a nearby ghoul, but misses as he's still shaking off the stiffness of his limbs. The ghoul tries to hit him again but misses this time. Ana mentally pushes the ghoul away from Brin before missing with her own blast to attack it. Ubek fires an arrow at the ghoul as he runs, Ana encouraging the group to run. Oshwyt finishes the ghoul off as the group runs. More start coming out of building as the group runs for their lives. Jamal supports Ana to keep going and not look back, but she's very tired. Margaret tries to pass on that encouragement to Margaret, but everyone is too tired and are clearly struggling. The Sunrise Fellows have suffered during their week stuck in the necropolis. Date Palm is caught by a ghoul as you run through the market, ducking and dodging to try and escape alive. Ana telekinetically yanks Date Palm away from the ghouls, which saves his life. After five minutes of running, the group has lost the ghouls and are able to slow down to a walk. Date Palm goes up to Ana to thank her. He pulls off his gloves and gives them to her in thanks. Brun drops the body, exhausted. Worm takes over carrying the body. They decide they want to go out. Just before they arrive at the gate, Jamal reminds the group they never looked over what they found today. They stop to identify items and price them to have a better idea about what the priests are taking. They have:- +1 Quarterstaff
- Pearl of Power
- Spellwrought Tattoo Needle (cantrip)
- Ring of Protection
- Potion of Bullstrength
- Great healing potion x2
19th of Haelynir 1545
Jamal wakes up early and excited to deal with finances. The ledger:- Ana owes the guild 3399.28 gold.
- Brin is given 1429.16 after paying back the guild though he still owes other people.
- Margaret gets 2900.72 gold.
- Jamal is given 1700.72 gold.
- Ubek owes the guild 849.28
- The guild owes the group 99.28
- Margaret pays back the people she owes gold to.
- Brin pays back the people he owes gold to.
- Ana is able to pay off the guild after getting gold back she had loaned to people.
At 10am Brin wakes up to Jamal watching him sleep. His coin is given to him to allow him to sort it out to whom he owes coin to. Brin grabs breakfast before grabbing Ubek to go help him find a trainer. They start at the hall of Blessed rebirth. With the aide of Mistress Everhand they decide Ubek would be best taunt the ways of the giants and smithing as he continues to become a better fighter. There is a smith in town that used to be an adventurer. He tells people he took an arrow to the knee but in reality he got married. A Vos man with a strange sense of humour. Mistress Everhand pens them a letter of introduction. After getting directions they arrive at the smithy. It's called the Hearthstone Anvilworks. After making introduction and reading of a letter Ubek is giving the price of 50 gold a week for training. Dalun is the name of trainer. Afterwards the group leaves to go and look over the building Jamal has lined up. He explains his desires about having a tavern at the front being a long term plan. They discuss all sorts of future plans for the guild and building.
Senenmerek is not impressed to see Margaret and tells her how reckless her orders were for the Ahkhat. It was forced to wait for her return and was attacked as a result. He was forced to show some adventurer's what for as they run away screaming about a skeleton. Senenmerek was able to save it and change the orders given so it was no longer waiting out in the open. The rest of the day is peaceful as Azaz and Khelru discuss plans for the temple with the skeleton to get his consent and thoughts. He is very excited by this and Senenmerek then starts interrogating the pair on the modern world. Near the end of the day they get ready to head off. Before they can make it back safely to the gate they are ambushed by 5 large centipedes. These insects are tough and are quickly working on taking out the party. Thankfully Ana screams for help and the nearby priests hear them. They come to their aide and prevent anyone from dying. Though many are repeatably knocked out. Bal Themm and the priests escort the group out of the necropolis as quickly as possible.
Just before Brin needs to leave for training Margaret, Ana, Khelru and Azaz come in looking beaten up. They tell their short story before Brin leaves.
Ana goes to the bath house and is directed to a separate area. Ilessi is waiting for her there. She looks pretty banged up. She gives the short story about her assignment.
- One member of the team came out of the necropolis.
- Went to the inn, got her stuff.
- Went to the veins.
- Met up with asshole.
- Asshole noticed her following them.
- They kicked her ass and left her for dead.
Brin trains and then fights in the pit. He wins his fight.
