CD Session 3: Who's going to fly it, kid? Report
General Summary
The crew of the SCS Uriel's Gauntlet finalizes preparations to leave Andophael and Heaviside Station. Abel interviews a slate of applicants for the position of Pilot, eventually settling on Siobhan Abay. She was formerly a high-acceleration racing pilot, but an accident destroyed her spinal cord in a way that conventional cybernetics could not fix. She was en route to Perithr to enter the queue for reconstructive bioengineering surgery, banking on the reputation of Perithr as the sector's pinnacle of medical capability. However, her steerage-class ticket was bumped, and she ran out of funds on Heaviside. Siobhan is eager to find work outside of the months-long contracts that cargo haulers to the gas mine usually offer. The passengers are boarded with little trouble. Two individuals are placed in cold sleep, and 11 others are assigned bunks. One passenger is late, insisting that a stray cat accompany her to Astynar. She is wildly eccentric, and even sells assets (against family advice) to pay the cat's passage. Kane pathologically insists they toss it out an airlock, but Abel manages to convince him the money is needed to make up for Keith's occupancy of one of their passenger bunks. Omar, having completed repairs on the moisture condenser for Kane's family, is assigned a new project by Abel--a hover-version of Siobhan's wheelchair. A trip to the Heaviside junk shops yields several antigrav generators, but their bulk leads to a ridiculously-oversized design. Omar says he has an idea to work on it, but doesn't disclose it just yet. The jump to OMD 62-18 proceeds without any remarkable events. The passengers bound for Astynar System are mostly family groups, so disruptions are kept to a minimum. This is the period where Omar spends most of his off-hours working on the hoverchair, and Kane practices weapon skills. Abel puts his Stewarding skills to practice with the passengers. The session ends with the Gauntlet emerging from metaspace into the OMD 62-18 system. The refueling station Choyr 1 is an O'Neill Cylinder habitat populated by the descendants of Mandate-era crew members. The station now operates as a waystation for ships traversing the Reaches. The station's docking hubs are insufficient to handle the high volume of starship traffic, however, so fuel tenders and transfer shuttles are used to taxi personnel and materiel between the habitat and other ships. Just as the crew enters the holding pattern near Choyr 1, a blinding flash momentarily disrupts the sensors--a starship has gone nova! The energy of a bottled sun bathes the area in terrific levels of radiation for a brief moment, and then the onlookers realize to their horror that the burst was not enough to vaporize the ship outright; now a debris cloud is expanding from the point of detonation at terrible speed...
