Session 1: The Spectral Professor Strikes! Report

General Summary

Following through on their promise to investigate the alleged sightings of a "spectral professor" near or on the campus of Columbia University. The heroes "stake out" the park that runs alongside the campus in the early evening. The park is busy with students, faculty and others enjoying a brisk winter's evening, but the enjoyment is soon interrupted when Professor Spectre appears directly in front of Zoetrope. She rose up from the ground through the drinking fountain, that they were rigging to spray water on an unsuspecting user. Frightened, Zoetrope jumped back and called the team for help.   The heroes quickly respond, with varying degrees of success. When Shrike charges the Professor, however, it frightens her and she retreats by disappearing into the ground once again.   The heroes determine that it was when Zoetrope activated their power that the Professor first attacked. They begin to clear the park in preparation to try and get the apparition to appear again. Professor Norbury, however, is there and questions what the heroes are trying to do. When Darkhawk tells her, she scoffs stating that there are no such things as ghosts. As a joke, Zoetrope creates an illusion of ghosts behind Archer. Unfortunately, this has the effect of drawing out Professor Spectre who, once again, attacks Zoetrope.   During the battle, Professor Norbury calls out the name "Rishi", as if she recognizes the ghostly teacher. This gives the heroes the chance and Zoetrope tries to neutralize the spectral being's powers. The plan works more than anyone could have thought. Professor Spectre becomes corporeal once again. She is shocked and so very grateful.   Professor Norbury rushes to the former ghostly professor, hugging her and telling her how much she missed her and how she thought Rishi was dead. Professor Spectre, as it turns out, was actually Dr. Rishima Doshi, a professor of physics at Columbia University. She had been experimenting with extradimensional teleportation with the help of Professor Norbury. Working one night, there was an accident and the backlash of dimensional energy trapped Dr. Doshi in between dimensions, unable to touch, feel or communicate with the normal world. Out of desperation she had hoped that using metahumans with powers tied to other dimensions, she might be able to cure her condition.   Professor Norbury thanks the heroes and takes Dr. Doshi to the hospital for a check before they return home.   After the team celebrates at a local shwarma place, Shrike discovers a corpse placed in a dumpster in an alleyway. On the wall is painted a number "1" in blood and the corpse of the homeless man is marked with a sigil carved into his chest. Shrike explains about what happened to the man (his power and blood were pulled out of his body) and that this is only the first.
