Spore binder

Armed with capes that attach to their bodies like the membranes on a sugar glider, the valiant volunteers trek across the Weeping Gates to the top of the waterfall. Masked, and cover head to toe, they jump from the waterfall, gliding down in circles, catching any spores floating in the waterfall's mist and throughout the area above their village.

It is an impressive performance, particularly whenever they approach the wall of fire. To the naive, the wall of fire would seem the main danger, however, fire would be a better death than what awaits any glider that crosses it over and ends in the mushroom forest.

Once they are down, their clothes will be scrapped, the crimson spores meticulously stored for later use. Unwilling (or often, incapable) of traversing the mushroom forest, obtaining spores drifting through the air is the best choice the people of Untuteb have found of securing this critical and deadly material.

Excerpt from "Candle River towns and customs"
Spore binders are capes designed for a tight snug fit that, when open-armed, provide a membrane that connects the arms and the legs.

Materials & Construction

The capes are usually made with very thin leather. In order to avoid weighing down the gliders, the capes need to be as light as possible, yet leather is the most common material in the area. So hides are scraped until light clearly shines through them. Then, they are thoroughly oiled to keep them flexible.
