As you approach the rainforest boundary, it is the trees that disappear first. They are replaced by bushes choked by vines, eager to absorb as much sun as possible in the absence of the forest giants. But soon, those too disappear, and ahead of you, there is only hard soil covered by a thin layer of loose sands.
It is not the torrid sun or the deep sands which silence the aptly named "quieting stream". The gurgling stops as soon as it approaches the invisible boundary created by a spell cast millennia ago.
The elves, in their zealous pursuit against the pyromaniac tengus, modified the landscape to make it harder for their enemies to escape. In this case, by removing the woodlands and savannah that would naturally cover their escape (and which the tengus had a penchant for burning) back into the rainforest.

Stalky Stelae
A day’s travel from the forest’s edge, rocky protrusions start dotting the landscape. As the hard soil wanes and the dunes grow in size, these pillars mock travellers’ pained advances through the sandy dunes. They are too tall and too distanced from each other to provide an alternative method to walking on the dunes, but at least they provide shade.
The pillars are of two colours: some pillars are reddish-brown, whereas others are purplish-grey. The purplish grey pillars are taller, but they can also be found toppled on the ground, whereas the reddish pillars are shorter, but are practically never found toppled by the winds or the creatures that traverse the area.
