Midget
The midget is a humanoid species that spread throughout the world before any of the other humanoid species. It has gone extinct almost everywhere as it was out-competed by the other human species. The only subspecies known to survive up to the 7th century A.B are the Tri-river marsh midget, cave midget, Saniri midget, Mankan midget and the Rhuli midget. The midget may appear small and weak, but it is capable of moving things twice it's weight and biological immortality and amazing memory can make it formidable.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Cave midgets are small and muscular with keen eyes, noses and ears. Their strong hands are very good at gripping things and it is said that they can crack nuts in their grip. Midgets also have relatively large mouths with fangs for canines. The midget's arms are about the same length as their legs, making them less efficient runners. They make up for this with their affinity for and skills and competence in digging, earthworking , swimming and climbing.
Biological Traits
Midgets never age, essentially making them biologically immortal. They also have large mouths with nasty set of fangs which they re-evolved after their ancestors lost them and they became small and insignifacant. Their arms and legs are the same length, though they still walk upright. They are covered in a coat of sparse fur and have an amazing memory to match their biological immortality.
Genetics and Reproduction
They reproduce like humans, but not too often.
Growth Rate & Stages
They mature like humans, but they have lost the ability to age.
Ecology and Habitats
Midgets have adapted to survive in a large variety of conditions, but the most common before the arrival of other humanoids are areas like hills with groves of trees where they can climb, dig, build and hunt for food. They usually fill the role of a predator and not apex predator as they are small enough to be eaten by creatures like lions, bears, crocodiles and leopards. Later they adopted more niche lifestyles in mountains and marshes where they were at an advantage with large strong arms which are good for climbing and swimming.
Using their earthworking and digging skills, they build themselves defensible forts and burrows as well as waterways for drinking water, defenses, and drawing game. This kind of behavior created interesting relationships with other species and caused full or partial domestication. One example is the Shyo, a keen omnivorous songbird that ate cockroaches and pesky insects in midget forts and gave an early warning when threats approached got shelter and food in return.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Midgets are hunting carnivors. They look for hot spots where their prey gathers and set traps for them. They hunt small game for food. This includes, ground birds, rodents, hyraxes, medium sized reptiles, fish, shellfish, crustaceans, etc which they eat raw. They use a small variety of snares, but they also wait in ambush with small spears or darts to kill their prey once they get close enough or trap them. However, in certain areas the local midgets had more plant rich diets.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Midgets live alone or in small groups that range from just two to as many as 14 at most.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
They have been used as slave labor or pets as they were never seen as humans. Midgets have also been used to remember things or for advice as they possess a phenomenal memory and are very intelligent.
Facial characteristics
A human-like face with large ears and a large set of jaws with a large mouth. The nose is also proportionally larger. Basicaly, the upper face is distinctly human-like while the lower face is much more monkey-like.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Up until around the 118th century B.B they were all over the place from the north Hu-Balai in the north to North Rashini in the south to lake Rhuli in the east. By the 13th century A.B all but the cave midgets were probably extinct.
Average Intelligence
Very high. Almost equal to that of a human.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Midgets have excellent color vision, excellent hearing and a decent sense of smell. Their night vision isn't bad either.
Civilization and Culture
Average Technological Level
Midgets got to advanced stone working on their own and learned metal working from humans and manderthals. They also know how to make good underground houses and earthworks.
Major Language Groups and Dialects
Hobsch. All midgets speak it.
Common Dress Code
None. Even though some have been known to dress in miniature human clothes in human presence or wear some form of protection or camouflage while hunting or trapping.
Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals
Eating raw meat, pairing for life, house construction and the occasional migration.
History
Not much is known about their history as they never really shared it or wrote it down. However, it is known that they had fallen into competition with humans and manderthals who hunted them for food and fought wars with them. The last known group of not cave midget midgets rebelled against their owners in the 13th century A.B and were killed in retribution (nobody really cared at the time). However, it is thought that there are some smart populations which still exist and are smart enough to cover their tracks in such a way that nobody can find them. Just like they say, the best creature at hiding is the one that was never discovered.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
They were hunted by humans and manderthals who use them for the uses mentioned before (like food or labor) as they were seen by both as intelligent animals but not as higher beings like them. They were in direct competition with both humans and manderthals and they did't really stand much of a chance.
Midgets and humans can't produce any hybrid offspring as they are so genetically different that even conception is impossible. The same goes with midgets and manderthals. The only thing that they would be able to mate with would be the Homo Habilis from the real world or something of the sort.
Midgets domesticated or partially domesticated a small number of animal species. This includes rabbits, some fish and few birds.
