Marquess (mar-kwess)

A Marquess, Marquis, or Marcher (feminine Marchioness or Marquise) is a title of nobility junior to a Duke and senior to an Earl or Count. Its territory is a March, usually situated on or near a border with an hostile foreign nation. (A March is usually about the same size as a County or Shire, but situated in a more militarily-vulnerable location.)

In the Kingdom of Beachia, it is the highest title that can be conferred on one who is not a member of the House of Hines or another regal family. The March of Shimernia is usually conferred upon the Lord High Admiral of the King's Fleet.
