Dremen

Dremen: Overview

The Dremen are among the most common and complex creatures to exist on Duende. Unlike most other races, the Dremen did not arrive on Duende, nor did they originate there. Rather, the Dremen are manifestations of the Dream brought into existence by the collective beliefs of intelligent creatures. Their origin, if they could be said to have one, is the Dream itself.

Dremen come in three basic varieties: Dremen, Alibrijes, and Dragmar. These are classifications, rather than specific species, seperated by a number of unique distinctions. The colloquiel 'Dremen', or Dream Men, are uniformly humanoid, though they may possess a number of features uncommon to the other races. They are intelligent and capable of all of the activities, motives, and emotions common to other intelligent races. Like all Dremen, they are possessed of a Dream Seed that grows with them. This peculiarity is both a source of great strength and great weakness. As long as their dream seed remains intact, they can be revived, and will in fact will regenerate over time, even if slain. However, if their seed is destroyed, they will die and be unable to be revived by any means.

The Alibrijes differ from regular Dremen in that they are uniformly plant or animal hybrids, whether some part of that hybrid is humanoid is largely irrelevant. Minotaurs, Fawns, Nagas, and many others fall into this category. Another telling difference is that Alibrijes, in general, tend to be less intelligent and creative than other races, being driven largely by instinct imposed upon them when their kind manifested in the world. As such, they are rarely ever inherrently evil, or at least no more so than a bear or wolf is evil, despite the fact that some prey on weaker creatures. This group make up the vast majority of Dremen, and also the widest variety. Because of this, they are usually referred to by their individual species rather than their collective categorization.

Finally, there are the Dragmar. Dragmar are literally the creatures of nightmares, manifested from the most horrible fears and imaginings that mortal minds have to offer. Like Alibrijes, they are driven primarily by instinct, however, unlike their more comprehensible kin, they tend towards unfathomable malice. Pain, greed, despair, suffering, fear, hate, rage.. the most negative and harmful of thoughts and emotions drive their creation, and so in turn become incarnated in the flesh as Dragmar. In times of war or great suffering, Dragmar will almost always appear, drawn to the negative thoughts and feelings that surround these types of events.
