Fayne

Fayne

It has long been established that there is a connection between mana and life, though that connection is poorly understood. During the Era of Desolation, it was learned that the mana could be drained from a living creature right up to the cusp of death, and if the right conditions are met, they are met with a fate much worse than death: they become the Fayne.

The idea of something akin to the Fayne has always been found lurking in the dark stories of cultures from across the universe, but their existance was highly speculative until the Era of Desolation. It is believed that when a creature is caught in the rather extraordinarly painful grip of quite literally being unravled at the lowest levels of existence by having the mana leached from them, their intense desire to survive at any cost can actually react strongly with the mana around them, staving off actual death. The massive migration of mana through the cosmos created vast numbers of the nightmarish creatures, and as they rose in numbers so to did the member of their kind that retained some element of their personality. In the victims desire to live at all cost, they condemn themselves to a half-life of never feeling whole.

There is a gnawing emptiness at the core of a Fayne's being that can never be filled because their physical reality can no longer trap and store mana. Fayne must absorb mana regularly to maintain their physical cohesion or they begin to decompose and fade a way. Starvation rarely kills the Fayne, however. Instead, they enter a hunger induced, pain wracked madness that slowly erodes all traces of personality until nothing is left but hunger and rage.

Fayne are predatory by nature, and through the mana released in the death of their victims they can sustain themselves. Some exceptional few have managed to manage that drive in Duende's mana rich environment by finding other sources of mana.
