Elder Lui

"Ah, the Southern Air Temple..." he said with a sigh, "A brilliant mixture of free-flowing spirits, who wish to fully embrace the beauty of nature for what it is."

Written by: Astra

Introduction

Born to the Earth Kingdom, Lui traveled to the Western Air Temple as an adolescent in search of a purpose, a piece of the puzzle he couldn't figure out. With the Air Nomads in the south, she eventually worked her way up to become the first ever Abbot, then becoming Regent Elder and finally Elder. Read more about Lui's personality and accomplishments in the article below.

Life

Upon joining the Air Nomads, Lui quickly befriended Elder Jinji with her charismatic personality and always-smiling face. Though he loved Western, he felt his journey guided him elsewhere, and moved to the Eastern Air Temple when Jinji was in the midst of her Western Air Temple restoration project.

As a Monk, Lui moved once again to the Southern Air Temple, finally settling down at the place he felt most comfortable. It provided the perfect spots for him to stargaze; a favorite pastime of his. In 307 AG, Lui became a Keeper. He enjoyed the opportunities the rank offered, but he still felt he had something missing. So, he took a year-long break from the traditional Air Nomad lifestyle.

On a whim in the year 308 AG, Lui decided to attend his first Keeper meeting at the Western Air Temple. Here, he noticed there was a new Keeper at the meeting, one he thought he'd seen around the Southern Air Temple in the past week. They quickly connected, and he supposed that was the moment he knew they must be related. Their heights might have been vastly different, but he and Astra had the same knowing grin and thin chestnut hair.

Whilst building the library with his newly discovered twin, Lui started to become close with Southern Elder Nel. They connected over their talent for architecture and design, and their ideas always seemed to blend perfectly. Lui began to focus on a goal: becoming Abbot. During this time, he did nothing but plan and build. As such, he lost touch with spirituality, and his bending seemed to falter. After a couple months, it was gone completely, leaving him to learn chi blocking to fill the hole losing his airbending left. Though times were not all drab, because in 311 AG, Nel pronounced Lui the first Abbot of the Southern Air Temple.

At Lui's Abbot ceremony, his friend Amanthi brought him and Astra toward a neighboring mountain, a twinkle in her eyes. She revealed to them a door hidden by vines, and they entered a small room carved into the side of the mountain, with overgrown plants and a small pond holding crystal blue water. Amanthi dedicated the room to the two, explaining that she'd built it years before as a haven for new Keepers to write. Amanthi had been the one who had inspired both of the twins to become Keepers, and the gesture was especially heartwarming to Lui; who was the first person she offered the room to when he was becoming a Keeper. Their eyes lined in silver, the group hugged and smiled and laughed.

Not a year after his promotion to Abbot, Nel brought Lui aside and told him he'd be taking an extended break from Elder, and he would trust no one more than his Abbot to hold his stead. Thus, Lui became the Air Nomads' first ever Regent Elder. For the two years he spent running the temple, he became more and more connected with it; more so than he ever thought possible. Eventually, Lui got back in touch with his spiritual side. He regained his airbending, whooping with joy as he blasted around the mountains of the temple.

In early 314 AG, Nel stepped down as Elder. Around the same time, Astra was pronounced the Elder of Air Temple Island, and Lui became the full Elder of the Southern Air Temple. The twins shared a ceremony before Lui had to return to Southern, but the two promised to keep in touch.

Lui is known as an Elder who loves his people and his temple above all. He is always a friendly face to all those he crosses paths with. Though he still misses Nel, who became one of his best friends over the years, and Astra, his "spicy twin", Lui loves being an Elder and helping the Air Nomads in any way he can.
