The Breathless
A prototype "Brigantine" style naval vessel built by the Keepers' R&D division based in Marcelheim adapting technology initially developed through proof of concept research done in collaboration with Forge Hearth and Fantalusia. The ship is made up of two lower decks, a top deck, and a raised Captain's Quarters that overlooks it.
The top deck is where the ship is steered from, boarding takes place and general surface interactions occur a small staircase at the rear leads up to the Captain's quarters below which the passenger rooms reside. The ship is twin masted both masts are engraved with a sequence of magic runes that generate the illusion of sails catching the wind to maintain the secrecy of the new technology.
Down one deck is primarily the crew deck: the kitchen, their quarters, a social area, etc. It has also been repurposed into the main cargo hold due to the space taken up on the bottom deck by the propulsion system.
The bottom deck is where the full scale prototype propulsion system is installed and maintained by a two person team one mage for adjusting the spell parameters and one mechanic for maintaining the physical plumbing system.
Propulsion
A hybrid of magic and mechanics, a combination of inlet pipes of narrowing diameter and a unique application of the control water spell.
At the front of the ship a pair of large diameter inlets allow sea water to flow into the system. They merge together into a single pipe which narrows in diameter as it moves towards the outlet opening at the rear of the ship. In the center area of the pipeline each section of pipe in engraved with a variety of runes that store and execute the control water spell to compress and accelerate the water through the pipe. Every few feet is a bypass valve that allows water to be diverted to a secondary non-magical pipe to allow individual sections to be physically replaced without having to completely halt and close off the flow of water to do it.
This prototype system requires constant care and maintenance. The mage is regularly adjusting the parameters of the spell making modifications to the runes along each section of the pipe. The mechanic is regularly replacing sections of the pipe itself. The flaw in this technology as it currently stands is that the active application of the magic causes considerable wear on the pipes, rusting them out far faster than it would naturally.
The hopes with this prototypes is to find the correct spell implementation to eliminate or at least diminish this side effect to an acceptable level.
