Blood of Ymir
The Blood of Ymir, said to be the very blood of the great Jötunn Ymir who's body is the world, is the most magically potent substance in the world. Also called the Water of Magic it can be used to power all sort of spells and enchantments and is one of the few known materials that can be used as a universal spell material being able to replace even the most rare and expensive components in spells. Needless to say this makes it very expensive.
The color of the Blood has been a favorite description of the Skalds due to its sheer impossibility. It appears as a milky white liquid with a blue tint and black sheen. It has been best described as the result of liquefying blue and black ice without melting them into water and then merging them into one liquid. Needless to say it is very reconcilable.
Other than its capabilities to replace spell components the Blood has many more uses. Most notably it can be used to brew very powerful potions of many varying effect. Potions of Youth, Storm Giant Strength, and of Magic Renewal can be brewed much easier and more powerful with the Blood than with conventional ingredients.
The Water of Magic is mostly found frozen in the glaciers far to the north of Útgarðar where it can be mined out of the ice. Some occasionally bubbles up in the hot spring of Galtarland where enterprising wizards troll the waters with very thin nets, for the Blood congeals together into motes that can be fished out. It can also be found in pockets deep underground forming small bubbles within the bedrock.
