Day 7. Today we were really lucky. Lydia came to work on the site with a small cough. She hid it from security personnel. After an hour or so, her cough turned into a super influenca. The dragon bone afflication isn't just a childrens tale. Its real. And its very dangerous. Fortunately Lindon, the site supervisor of the day, reacted the moment he realized what was going on. The site was quarantined within minutes. One after the other the sick were airlifted to the Metropolitan. There they could be treated under the Magic-Suppression Array. Everyone survived. All work will be haulted until everyone is officialy cleared and a full audit of the situation is made.
Lydia really should have known better, she is one of the best interns this time around. I was hoping to hire her in a full time position after this dig is over. Now I don't know if I can really trust her enough. She is just so damn good at the work otherwise.
An affliction caused by dragon bones and blood. It affects humans and other species who come into direct contact with either. It is a condition mostly known among
Dragon Loyalists and orphans of the loyalist orphanages, as they are the most likely to come into contact with dragon bones or blood. Until recently, there were very few effective treatments to this affliction. An infection was often fatal or had major long-term health repercussions.
The contact with dragonic mystical energies can cause pre-existing conditions and diseases to become supernaturally charged. Although this is unlikely to happen, it can affect any type of disease or aliment. The mystical energies make the virus, bacteria, cancer cells, fungus and more much stronger than its natural counterpart. This makes the symptoms become much stronger, and the disease lasts longer and spreads faster. An average human immune system will have a hard time defending against it, making even the most benign diseases potentially deadly.
A supercharged disease which spreads to another host only keeps a portion of its supernatural power. And once separated from the source of dragonic mystical energies, the condition will slowly lose its effect. Under normal circumstances, this can still be deadly and the affected person has to be separated from the source immediately. This is difficult for loyalists who have received their
dragon tattoo as it cannot be removed easily.
Treatment
Originally, the only way to treat this affliction was to purge the mystical energies with a spell or ritual from the body of the afflicted. Many of these rituals have negative side effects and can be performed by few shamans, witch doctors and other mystics.
A
Magic-Suppression Array is a very effective treatment of this affliction as it suppresses the supernatural aspect of the disease. This allows traditional medical treatments to take action and remove the underlying disease. Once the victim has fully recovered, they can leave the magic suppression array again. This method has brought some safety from this affliction and reduced the fatality rate considerably.
Both treatments are easily available to dragon loyalists who have access to many resources from the network. Other people are often not as fortunate and will often die from this affliction.
Great read! I love the concept of the dragon bone supercharging a disease that the user already has. I'm wondering, could it also supercharge a disease that the user didn't know it had (dormant gene or something)? That would make for some interesting and creepy stuff. :3 Keep up the good work! :D
Absolutely! I have some plans. Will have to update this anyway for formatting. And after rereading it, I realize it could also improve something positive. Like a supernaturally charged liver or heart that lets you recover more easily from hangovers and perform better in sports!
