Pledge
My focus this summer will be on writing my dissertation. So time for creative writing will be limited, but I hope to use it as a way to de-stress. This also means that I don't plan on doing too much.
However, my goal is to complete a total of 16 prompts for the silver badge! I'm going to focus on prompts that inspire ideas in me and not try to force anything. They should be fun to write!
Theme 1: Power
This is an issue that is important in most aspects of my world.
Factions compete for resources, territory, and the rights of their members. At present, direct, violent conflict between factions is very rare. Thus, power is mostly exercised through legal, political, and financial means. A potential focus for this topic could be the
Loyalist Client Organizations, as they are the key to the soft power of the
Dragon Loyalists.
Theme 2: Frontier
There are many different frontiers in the World Behind the Veil. The clearest and most obvious is the
Hell Gate, which leads to a hell dimension inhabited by a hostile force bent on conquering Earth. The
Legion of Glory has defended this border for many centuries.
Another frontier is the conflict between urban and rural areas. My worldbuilding is set in
Manhattan and the
Adirondack Mountains, which are both on the other side of this border. Currently, I don't really connect them, but it would be interesting to write about these conflicts, as they certainly exist!
The third major frontier is being explored at the
University of Mystical Arts & History. Scientific advances in the areas of supernatural/technological combination are a significant part of this world. For example, magic has made flying with
aircrafts much safer!
Theme 3: Relics
Dragon Bone Talismans are an entire category of relics with great power. They are a large part of the legacy of
dragons in this world. It would probably make sense to expand on that.
Something I have not written much about are the relics of the
Hunters Guild. They are an ancient organization obsessed with collecting old, powerful things. Could elaborate on their archives and vaults.
Finally, the
New York Public Library would probably fit into this theme, as they have a huge collection of occult baubles and trinkets in their collections.
Theme 4: Communication
Communication technology abounds in my world. Many call this the information age for a reason. So it is rarely a limiting factor. The question is, how do we navigate the information overload or overflow? What tools are available? Perhaps I could touch on desinformation and its many forms and how it is used by different factions.
Social media is a fairly new development and it might be interesting to think and write about how supernatural communities interact with it. Some are likely to reject the digital transformation altogether, while others may embrace it. Do they have their own social media platforms? Communication apps? Do these involve magic? Or have they blended into the big platforms that everyone uses?
When it comes to lost languages, I have
Dragonic Teleempathy. This language was only spoken by dragons, so the last dragon doesn't really have anyone to talk to in this way. Maybe some of the prompts could help explain this more, or how
Cassidy uses this language to overpower humans and other creatures with her
Dragonic Authority.
And then there is
Dragonic, a language created and spoken by the
Dragon Loyalists to facilitate communication across language barriers around the world. At the same time, it is probably threatened by the English language, as far more people speak it.
Whooo best of luck with writing your thesis! * sends all the coffee * I like your strategy of using summer camp as a way to decompress while writing probably the most important document so far. Have loads of fun and inspiration to get that shiny silver!
Thank you, ShadowPheonix! Hopefully it will work out ^^ Wish you loads of inspiration and ideas for SC!
