Umberlee, the Bitch Queen and Godess of the Sea
The influence of Umberlee can be felt by all coastal settlements. She is the furious goddess whose turbulent nature is reflected by the waters of the deep. Coastal communities make sure to sponsor holidays to appease the Sea Godess in order to avoid her fury.
The Bitch Queen is commonly worshiped out of fear instead of adoration, and ship crews offer her gems, tossed over the side, to calm storm-tossed waters. Those who travel her waters have best be willing to pay the price of treading her domain.
Usually the clergy of Umberlee is not organized. Her priests roam coastal cities, warning of doom and demanding free passage on ships in return for ensuring the goddess’s pleasure. Often they wear the blue colours of the water, and they decorate themselves with items that remind others of the sea’s dangerous nature — a necklace of shark teeth, seaweed wrapped about a human bone, and so on. The preserved hand of a drowned person is thought to be a particularly holy object, and some of her few clerics use such severed hands as holy symbols.
Umberlee has a dedicated temple to the her in the port town of Strayhill and a smaller shrine in Phlan.
