A Mile is Not Enough, Pet Writing Prompt
Q: I want to adopt a cute pet in your world. What is it and how do I look after one?
A: Everyone has differing ideas on what 'cute' is, and all sorts of things can be pets! Animals, people, monsters, robots, constructs, summons, demons, elementals... so let's get into it!
If you have a pokeball, you can catch a monster as a pet. Exactly what counts as a monster is very nebulous... mostly what counts as a monster for whatever culture is familiar with it (or lives nearby if no one's familiar). How do all monsters count as pokemon? Well, 'pokemon' is short for 'pocket monsters'. Why are they called 'pocket monsters'? Because of the pokeball! But what about before the invention of the pokeball? What were they called then? Monsters! So zombies are pokemon, as are dragons, robots found in ancient ruins, eldritch abominations, and elementals!
Animals aren't monsters, though. They're animals. Even if it's a monster to you, it might not be to whoever lives with the thing- like a sabertoothed moose lion. That's just a normal animal, because the Earthbenders that live near them say so. Respect the opinions of other cultures whose land you're passing through, yo.
But you did say 'cute', so let's look at something small, fluffy, with big giant eyes, that make chirping sounds. Depending on where you are, you can either buy a pokeball or an animal travel cage, or a pet outright without looking for one. Literally anything you can imagine, no matter what it is, is out there, and it's waiting just for you!
When you pick your pet, you'll need to know its own care needs, all of which have exceptions:
Robots only need electricity or battery power.
Animals need food, water, sleep, and the environment to be similar to where they're from.
Constructs, elementals, summons, and animate corpses don't need anything.
Eldritch abominations need- well you won't ever understand.
