Scarsan

Scarsan in Virosia

To hunt a Sartor is a task deemed too dangerous for most. Manipulation of The Veil is volatile and will typically result in death, or worse, a Mythral curse. Some, however, deem it necessary despite the dangers to rid the world of those that would bend magic toward malicious intents. Most Dwarves refer to them as Velagir, or "misguided of the veil", as they refuse the progress mythral brings. The elven taskforce for hunting those that use the crystal without its consent are the Myaeran. Talii know them as Umb'kano, "Cursed-folk" as they always return home changed. Humans call them "Scarsan", the Aleraen word for "one that seeks those with a perceived vulnerability". Colloquially, they are "Brief-ones"; a reference to a life often cut tragically short by their quests.   Whatever you are known as, your life is built around a set of skills that make you well suited for slaying those that cast spells from mythral crystal. Some scarsan might bounty-hunt for nobility, some might have a personal grudge to settle, while others still are cursed themselves by mythral and have welcomed the hex to better destroy it. Others still are merely wanderer's that have had a a few too many chance encounters and have acquired these skills by happenstance.

Myths of Scarsan

For as long as Sartor have existed, Scarsan have also existed in some capacity. Scarsan, however, have a mixed bag of reception from those around them. Some share their belief for a myriad of reasons: Sartorcraft and veilsinging are the nobility's tool to oppress the unfortunate. The arcane is often misused, but enforcement of its misuse is rare in most places. One of the mythmakers involved with the downfall of Yrus Felbrood, the elf Ilmas Vaegath was referred to as a scarsan in her time. A zealot of Qenaara, she harbored resentment to those that would make a mockery of the beauty of mythral. She was prolific in sharing her study of potion-craft, such that alchemy surrounding steeling oneself from mythral is referred to as Vaegathian alchemy.   Many scarsan are less noble, with life as vagrants that wander the realms, taking work in much less glamorous places, if indeed they work for anyone at all. One such is the Srelik'han of the Talii'Mendo realm. Legend to have a mythral curse that stops their aging, this Talii scarsan is said to be drifting with the wind - without sails - in the Lear sea, destined to collide with malicious sartor that plague their archipelago.
