Having ruled the known world since 2001 DA, the Valerian Dynasty saw a general decline throughout the 22nd century. The Dynasty, having grown to encompass several dozen branches and over two-hundred members, continually fought amongst themselves for the throne, with as many as four Emperors in a single year. This chaos would only end when the Purple Blood Plague nearly annihilated the family, killing nine out of ten Valerians. After a short interregnum, Eugeron Valerian took the throne in 2180. This is seen by many historians as the begin of the Late Valerian Dynasty. Although Eugeron was actually a direct descendant of the mainline, which had ruled until 2103, it was seen by many as a different entity and referred to as Late to make that distinction clearer.
