The Tyrant Star

Do not gaze upon IT! For from the infinite Abyss IT will gaze back!
— Afrik Valagar, High Priest of the Moiran Temple
Some things are not meant to be understood. Some things are not meant to be looked into. Some things are not meant to be seen. Many objects and phenomena out there fit into one of these categories. The Tyrant Star fits all three. When it was discovered is unknown. Who named it is as well. All that we know is that this most enigmatic of stellar objects has accompanied humanity since primordial times. Myths, legends, folk tales, many stories see it appear in one form or another. And whenever it appears, both in fiction and reality, there is only one thing that it brings...madness.   The Tyrant Star is an object within the Rings of Verbrian, a stellar constellation consisting of twelve bright stars and another nine dimmer stars that form two intersecting rings. It shines in a strange light that appears somehow "dark" to the human eye. "Dark" not black for the star is visible to the human, at least in a clear night. It moves in erratic lines through the constellation and dims the light of the other stars whenever it passes. Some days see it move closer to earth than others, small mercy that these are few in number, one occurring every ten or so years. Whenever it does, its baleful light causes strange effects to materialize. Madness, bloodlust, great disasters, wars and uprisings, mankind seems at their worst when touched by the light of the malicious star. Some claim that it is not a star at all, but Leechany, the Avatar of Chaos, moving through the Cosmos. Others that it is some kind of demon or otherwordly being that wishes to cause harm to humanity. And then some believe the claims of malice and darkness to be nothing but hearsay. Whatever the truth may be, there is no doubt that the Tyrant Star is not like other celestial bodies.

Mysterious... I'll have to put on my madness-safety goggles and take a closer look. May I ask who or what the "Rings of Verbrian" are named after?   I imagine if you wanted to perform any form of dark magic, it would be done under the tyrant star.   How many of the cataclysms you've mentioned have happened concurrently with the tyrant star's passing?

Really interesting. I wonder if the star actually has an effect or it just appears that way because people expect it to have an effect.
