Toothbrush
C'mon its either using that little stick for a few minutes every day or rotting teeth. Ain't that much of a choice now is it?A toothbrush is a simple yet very useful item. Bog bristles or horsehair attached to a handle made of bone. The Rhomeion and their successor nations such as Vardanians and Illigarans have used it since before the Age of Wrath, over 6000 years ago. Cultures that have more recently moved into the lands along the Great Divide on the other hand have been introduced to it much later. Ferans, for example, have only begun to commonly use the item in the 18th century DA. Before it was mostly looked at with suspicion, as have most things Vardanian. They are generally used for a period of about three months before being discarded. Produced by the Ordo Medicara, which oversees all things medical (from administrating hospitals to observation of water quality) they are sold for three copper coins apiece. The organization uses the sell of basic articles of hygiene as an alternative source of income, independent from the constantly fluctuating state funding. Over time an entire industry has developed around the production of hygienic articles. Shops selling medicine will have a large array of different brushes (various types of hair/bristles as well as different materials for the handle) next to their selection of medicine. Vardanian children learn early on that proper hygiene is important. Even among the lower classes, white teeth are a common sight. The brushes are cheap, clean water is available in abundance in most cities (with public cleaning places open to those people that do not possess a bath of their own) and the process is helpful in preventing diseases and other ailments resulting from teeth sicknesses.
