Phlegethon River
The Phlegethon River has been present in mythology and literature throughout the history of man. To the ancient Greeks, the Phlegethon River was a fiery river in the infernal regions of the underworld. In Dante's Inferno, it is a river of hot, boiling blood found in the seventh circle of Hell. Spenser, Milton, Poe and even Lovecraft all described it as Hell's fiery hot river.
It is no surprise, then, that the river of lava flowing from the yellowstone supervolcano would also share this name.
What is surprising, however, is that there would be anyone on Rift's Earth knowledgeable enough of classic Earth literature to name it so. Or is there a thread of truth behind its name that pre-exists the literature itself?
Geography
There is a stable Nexus Point half-submerged in the center of The Glow that regularly forms rifts to a demonic realm of fire and magma. Every time it opens, magma bursts from it, adding to the contents of the vast volcano and causing an overflow of lava through the gap in the southwest wall.
The river of lava meanders in a southwesterly direction, roughly following a ley line before it eventually cools into an effluvial fan extending all the way to what was once the Great Salt Lake of Utah.
Fauna & Flora
All manner of fire loving beings can be found in and around the river of lava. Especially prevalent are elementals and salamanders. There is always a steady trickle of demons wandering from The Glow, following the flow and the ley line. The only flora found in the area are Flame Spouts.
The rift in the center of The Glow does not always lead to the planet of Hades.
It has been known for almost two hundred years that creatures who call themselves demons and who come from Hades were entering Earth from this location. Thousands of years of human belief systems associated with the terms Demons and Hades have created a link to The Spirit World. Made possible by this belief, abhorrent demons and sufurous tides of fire come though when rifts form to the Spirit World's version of hell.
The question one must ask oneself is if this is the hell we believe in, is it the real Hell?
