Merfolk
Merfolk were one of the first races created on Aanrah, created by the god Sen Srrgrrlus. Largely aquatic and usually capable of shifting between a aquatic and terrestrial form, merfolk once dominated the world before the loss of both moons, but still continue to be one of the most powerful species on Aanrah.
Merfolk are considered to have one distinct subspecies, commonly called 'landlocked' merfolk. These merfolk usually are known to live exclusively in fresh water areas and lack the ability to turn into their full fish-like forms. They commonly look like river fish and frogs.
Merfolk usually lay between 2 and 5 eggs, and almost always have one or two eggs that are not fertilized or never hatch. They do not hybridize as easily as other races, though hybridization works best when the merfolk is the mother. As such, merfolk hybrids are fairly rare, but far from impossible without magical assistance.

Physical
By default, merfolk appear as having humaoid upper halves with long, fish-like lower halves, reaching between 8' and 12' feet. When on land, they lose their fish-like lower halves in exchange for humanoid legs, and stand between 5' and 6'5". Females tend to be larger then male merfolk. Merfolk are covered in fine scales that turn to more smooth, skin-like patches in places like the chest or under arms, and usually have fins of various shapes and sizes on their ears, backs, and outside of arms and legs. All merfolk have razor-sharp teeth that cycle out frequently like a shark's. A merfolk's coloration varies widely, and usually is akin to aquatic creatures that live in their native habitat.Merfolk are considered to have one distinct subspecies, commonly called 'landlocked' merfolk. Age & Reproduction
Merfolk have similar lifespans to humans and usually live to around 80 years old, hitting their juvenile stage at 14, adulthood around 20, and old age around 60.Merfolk usually lay between 2 and 5 eggs, and almost always have one or two eggs that are not fertilized or never hatch. General Culture
Merfolk are usually a part of the Weg'olw'chye culture. They are known for being a prideful people who create complex and sprawling societies under the ocean. They create some of the world's finest jewelry, and are known for being quite the conisseurs of surface jewelry as well. Merfolk are often associated with sailors and waterside towns, where they can be frequently found and traded with. They are also known for being one of the races with the least sense of what a country border is, frequently traveling wherevery they see fit without care.Traits
Merfolk (sans landlocked merfolk) are capable of switching between an aquatic and terrestrial form, which occurs at will or when out of the water for a long amount of time. They have gills that allow them to breath underwater, and tolerate pressures other races wouldn't. Their eyes are specialized to see underwater, with higher degrees of specialization depending on where they hail from. They do need to keep moist and highly hydrated, however, or they will dry out and die.
