Vanibors

Vanibors (/van ɯˈboɾs/, "Stubbornhorns") in Mögchin, also known as "Veliyfo" (/ve ˈlijfo/, "Rockhoof") in Inlelish, are a species of hardy goats native to the mountain ranges of Cryngasth. Resilient and stubborn, vanibors are important sources of food and wool for many countries on Cryngasth.

Fearless Alpine Goats

Biology

Vanibors live between 18 and 20 years, though average lower in more populated areas where they are hunted frequently. Males and females exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males being larger then females. Males exhibit the impressive set of horns the species is well known for, with female's horns only exhibiting the first forward point. Their thick, curly fur usually comes in shades of browns to brown-reds, with some variation between the northern Cryngasth mountain range and the southern continental spine. Their fur helps insulate them from the cold weather of their natural mountain habitats. Males compete for breeding rights during breeding season using their giant horns, and females usually give birth to one or two precocious calves. Males will protect their herd from predators and other unwanted interlopers, using their horns and hooves to drive off foes.
Vanibors are obligate herbivores, subsisting on the tough plants that grow at higher altitudes. They travel to lower altitudes during the snowy season, but are still well adept at digging up and eating any plants they can find.

Ecology

Vanibors live in high mountainous areas, adept to high altitudes and cold weather. They tend to be found on mountains with summit meadows, and avoid areas that are too steep to navigate. Unlike some other species of mountainous goats, vanibors cannot walk on extremely sheer cliff faces, though can travers scree fields with ease. During the winter or poorer weather, vanibors may migrate down to more protected and forested altitudes, but rarely linger or travel further below this.

Mountain Herds

In Mögchin & Inlelish Societies

Vanibors serve as a important animal in both Mögchin and Inlel cultures. They are hunted and herded by higher altitude people, where they are harvested for meat, milk, and wool. While some attempts at cultivating them at lower altitudes have been attempted, they have largely failed. Some gnomes are known for riding them, and though they are stubborn and difficult to break, they are said to be some of the best mountainous mounts.
The Inleish god Mamhelleqiip is said to be a vanibors.

As Quarry

Vanibors are widely hunted and used as semi-domesticated herds. Their wool and pelts are known for being incredibly durable and warm, making them ideal for those living at high altitudes. Their antlers are coveted as both hunting trophies and as crafting material, used frequently by local people for every and any tool. Female vanibors can be milked, and their milk can be turned into a thick cheese. Vanibors cheese is widely eaten across Cryngasth, but visitors may find the flavor to be a little strong - same with their milk. Vanibors meat, sausage, and jerky is its own staple among those living in and near the mountains.
